Default Running VTEC off a shift light? TRUE or FALSE

I've asked this before here on HT, but I've never really received a solid answer. I've heard through a shop owner who seems to be an expert on "budget" builds. We won't get into much there but anyways...

I don't have a VTEC ECU, and my motor is ready to go. LS-VTEC and it's going into my DC4.

I SHOULD just buy the right ECU, pin my harness and be done with it. But I'm out of money and I just want to drive this thing so...

I have an RPM tach with a shift light. Can I run VTEC off the shift light, set to 5200 using a relay? Does the VTEC ECU contain VTEC fuel maps? Won't a regular ECU compensate for VTEC activation?

So can I do this? True or False?

Thanks guys.

You can run vtec off of a shift light, vtec can be activated by a rpm switch, tach, basic vtec controller, ect. I have done it on a old EF back in the day with a autometer tach and shiftlight. But I would suggest saving up a bit more money and get the right ecu for your motor. Yes they do have different timing and fuel maps for when you are in vtec and will run better then just activating vtec.

Bad idea. Get a chipped ecu and have someone tune it for you. The vtec will activate using the shift light but the tune will be wayyyyyy off.

Do not run vtec off a shift light. A vtec ecu uses high & low cam fuel & ignition maps for a reason. If you run your vtec off a 12 volt switched source such as a shiftlight you will not be running on the proper fuel & ignition timing maps.

A p28 will only work good if it has been reprogrammed and tuned for his engine.
