Default Mini Me - Timing Advance / Retard - Crazy question for newbie

Ok
My top Assuming is D16y8
Block d15b

-
Standard cam gear ( non adjustable )

I have Advance the Timing on The Ignition timing to almost 90%
When i reduce or retard it i can feel the poor performances . the more i advance the better the engine run , i am considering Advancing Max out .

-
is Ignition Advance retard the same as Advancing the Cam gear or retarding the Cam gear .

can someone share their insight for me on this .

What are my option as i am waiting to upgrade my Cam gear to adjustable .
But possible in a Few month .

should i Max out the Ignition Timing ( Advance )

I try playing with the Air/fuel Screw on The throttle body but is not really doing much .

what else is my option .

pardon for asking noob question i am learning

There are head stamps to figure out what head you have.

The Idle screw only adjusts...idle.

What ecu are you using?

The car is a 5 Gear MT .

Recently change a Civic city Timing belt
and also due to i recently got the Car , i did not know much about it .

i know the ECu maybe wrong .
and i also notice my Cam gear is one of those normal standard one .

i was told Mini Me mod need 4.75 Advance or Retard ( still learning )

So i am trying ti figure out if it ok to Adjust the Ignition timing ( maxing it out )

assuming i still need another 4.75 ( advance on the Cam )

Is thos 2 the same thing or the Ratio is a larger format and the Ignition timing is the fine tuning end

d16y8 needs a 12* ignition timing. Use this ignition timing. If you're timing off the factory d15 crank pulley you'll have to 'guess' where 12 degrees is or get a timing gun that you can set for 12 degrees and set the timing accordingly.

Other single cams use 16* timing.

You need a correct manual transmission ECU, typically a P2P, if your head is in fact a y8 head.

Since you said you changed to a honda city timing belt, which country are you in?

I am in Thailand .

i have almost Max out the Adjustment moving it in Advance direction .
Still feel that the Car is a little soft on power. If i adjust more i still cn move it like 1-2mm maybe .

i sure can feel that the engine have more power and also run smoother .
The spark plug burn very well and look good .

.

Since i have not Adjust or Done anything with the Cam gear i was wondering adjusting the ignition Timing a temp option . till i adjust the Cam gear.
+ 12* ? or - ? in which direction ,

Anyone have a photo example ?

+ 12* on the ignition timing
My question is where is Zero ?
and when we move it to the max to either the Advance or - Retard end .
how many degree is it . is it +20 or -20 if we hit the end or what the number what you max out that adjusting . so i can use it as a close estimate There no marking line i can draw a line at the center where the center draw is located .

You need to do this with a timing light. Follow the instructions below.

is it
15* ?
20 * or 25* or 30 * or even 45*

Is the center line i draw 0 degree ?

You use this tool: Innova Equus Inductive Timing LIght (DIS) 3551

to figure out your ignition timing.

If you just want to guess, set it in the middle, of the adjustment range, but you can never get 12* accurately without the timing light.

Also, get the correct ECU for a 5MT car, the ECU you have is an auto, that may or may not also be causing problems.

I have done the Manual way and adjusting the Ignition timing slowly - each time by 1* using a pencil to mark a center line and moving it slowly to determine at which mark the Engine sound best and also after every marking i go out for a drive to see how the car feel .

Base on the photo
I marked 3 point .

what i am confuse is . does Point " b " in the photo = 0*

If i turn the setting all the way to Point " C " what the Reading ? 15* 20* 25*

-

If my Cam gear is NOT ADJUSTED to Advance 4.75*

can i compensate it by Adding 4.75 Degree on the Ignition distributor

Giving me almost 16.75 * to counter the Cam gear under setting .

There are too many variables to say and it's not necessarily 0° directly in the center. It depends on how it was clocked internally from the factory.

You can't adjust it "manually", even on cars that you "can" you STILL NEED a timing light to do it properly. All you are doing is getting it in the ballpark where the engine computer can make adjustments to get it to run OK. If you want it to run correctly, purchase a timing light otherwise you are just pissing in the wind.

The problem with Thailand is the last time i went to a Workshop . he link his Light gun up and point it to my Engine , and 45 sec later he said " 810 rpm "
and said my adjustment was good and that it .

did not even adjust anything .

Then you got ripped off. Buy your own timing light and make a small fortune off of others.

Then maybe it WAS fine.

You really are fretting over an engine that pushes out about 125hp and 100tq. It's not going to feel much faster than it was before...

The main reason is i am trying to find way to Compensate for the Cam gear not being adjusted .

1.i am getting poor MPG .
2.The spark plug is burning well - but having High Mpg i should be burning over Rich .
3. I have try reducing the Air flue Screw to tighten and turn back 3-4 round .
i can;t remember my bad setting but a while ago it even hit 14Mpg

Slowly is improving . and it getting back to the 20 Mpg range .
My goal is 27-29Mpg City .

on highway is doing fine . about 36-42mpg

I am still confuse if adjusting distributor almost the same as adjusting cam gear ?
i will be testing other range. in a few days .
notice a Tire at 11 Psi today .
may beed a tire Patch or change tomorrow so would not be driving fast

There are many things factoring into what could contribute to bad gas mileage, and you constantly adjusting ignition timing is not helping.

A d16y8 engine was rated at 26city 31hwy which would average about 28.5mpg...so if you're in that range...you're doing fine.

If you are adjusting the idle screw (what you call the air flue screw) all you need to do is set the factory idle. It isn't really going to change anything else.

Adjusting the distributor is not adjusting the cam gear.

Adjusting the distributor is adjusting the ignition timing which is adjusting when the spark plug is igniting (hence ignition timing) in relation to the position of the cam lobe.

Adjusting the cam gear is adjusting the cam lobe position relative to the piston position.
