Default help with block rebuild

I just picked up a 98 JDM b18c5 itr long block. I'm told that the piston rings are bad, and I'm going to replace them soon. Since i'ma have the engine broken apart, what else should i do to the block to ensure reliablity? is it neccessary to have all the rod bearings, piston rods replaced and to have the block resurfaced??

9 times out of 10 there's nothing wrong with the block. Take it to your machine shop and have them check the cylinders and the deck surface. Then just have them hone the cylinders and rebuild it.

But would it be better to have all the rod bearings and bolts replaced since they have to come out anyways in order to replace the piston rings? And how much would it cost to do all this including the deck resurfacing?

When I say "rebuild" I mean replace all the bearings, seals, rings, etc. Many people do resurface the decks but your machinist can check it to see if it's even necessary.

to do it right take it to the machine shop and have them pressure test it and check the deck and clyinders for any egg shaping also u could have them check out your crank and rods and pistons its not very common to do any of this tho unless ur really going after HP so just pull it apart replace all bearings, clean the piston ring lands out perfectly replace with new rings and do one piston install at a time and tighten bearings to spec and replace your thrust washer it a walk in the park job the heads the harder part just my 2 cents
