94 Civic water circulation problem
I have a 94 civic that I have replaced the radiator and the thermostat to try and solve a overheating problem. The car will not overheat while idling in the shop or during short drives. But in a trip of say more than 5 miles the motor runs hot. No water in the oil or moisture in the tailpipe. The heater will also stop working and I am thinking the engine may be haveing a circulation problem. When water is replaced that has been lost thru the overflow and air bled from the system the engine runs fine while idling in the shop. Also I am not getting any pressure in the water system when idling. Any help with this would be appreciated. Thanks Russ

If your heater doesn't work and your having overheating problems. That is sometimes an indication of a leaking/blown head gasket. Do you see white smoke out of the tail pipe?
Other than that you could try replacing the water pump. It is the only device in the cooling system that is used to circulate the coolant.

Re: 94 Civic water circulation problem
would it be possible for the water pump to function properly for a length of time and then quit. The car will run fine for a limited time, including the heater. But then the heater starts blowing cold air ant the engine overheats. Top radiator hose is hot, bottom hose is cool. Could the pump work for awhile and then quit pumping?

No, The water pump is always spinning as long as your engine is running. The water pump is driven directly by the timing belt it doesn't have a clutch or any type of stall gear in it.

Re: 94 Civic water circulation problem
Usually the problem with one hose hot and the other cold is thermostat. I recently had to get one from honda directly because the ones from carquest weren't working new out of the box. If you're not getting any pressure in the hoses you need to most likely replace the radiator cap as well.
