ARP studs installed with oil in threads?
Hey guys, I have a question I removed the cylinder head on my B18C5 to replace the head gasket because I was hoping I had a blown HG, I found that piston #1 had damage so I changed my plans to install the head back on with the same HG and later when I have $ I will have the entire swap pulled and rebuilt.
So the engine is still in the car and when I re installed the ARP head studs I did not clean out the little bit of oil/ fluid that was in some of the holes in the block, the studs I did clean and I remember hearing a hissing sound when I screwed them in.., I didn't think much of it other than its just air bleeding out, I screwed them in all the way down and backed them off about 3/4 a turn like I always done in the past when I have assembled these engines only those engines I built were all fresh out the machine shop this engine wasn't so I totally over looked that part.
Basically right before I installed the head I was reading up on building a V8 engine that night and it was talked about that if head studs are screwed in with oil in the holes it can crack the block, so I panicked and next day I removed the studs from my B series block and cleaned out the holes dry, there wasn't much if any fluid but there was some present so I'm wondering if I may have possibly did some damage to the block now. Everything was assembled back with no issues, but I have not started the engine due to my plans on having it pulled soon to be rebuilt.
I just hope I don't end up with a crack in the block...

If there's too much oil in the hole then it will become hydraulic and yes it can crack the block if you were to keep trying to torque the studs down. It's good practice to clean out the old oil but you're probably fine. The air hissing sound is normal. With the studs, you are basically just setting the correct installed height and applying a light amount of torque(5lb/ft or so) to keep them where the should be. When you torque the nuts the studs shouldn't be going any deeper in the block.
In your case, since you backed the studs out a little, you shouldn't have any issues.
