FWD Drifting
I've done it too, in my dad rental car that was a pontiac grand am (don't you just love rental car abuse). Except the ground wasn't wet and the trays litterally lasted for about 5 secs, so then we were sliding around and driving around with the back tires locked up. We ended up with a "bald" or "flat" spot on both of the tires, my dad drove it and kept hearing a bumping sound and was like, wtf happened to the car...lol. I love rental cars, its ******* funny to going forward with the car at a 45 degree angle.
Oh god i need to get out more.

I also thought that to "drift" you need to have your "rear" wheels power you through the turn as your front wheels guide. Yes controlled power slide is one way to look at it. But dragging your rear wheels through the turn is not drifting, it's called fish tailing.

LOL
pretty much is
the original poster asked if any one in OC is drifitng their FWD cars....not daily driving I hope!!
sometimes Shane will drift his cavy into the entrance of our neighborhood....he comes close the curb alot. LOL
(to shane-and that turn at the mall....skimming the bushes heh??)
They had a skidpad setup at the last event I went to at laurens....I didn't bother to try it...Shane ran it once in my civic and it didn't look very fun. An integra was using his ebrake which seemed to work but was horrible for the car, he was leaving the back wheels locked all the way around the "8".
Now on the other hand, the RWD cars were out having a blast.
Even though I have an FWD....I think I have drifted before...maybe it wasn't a "real" drift....
plus, in autox, its not too hard to get the back end to "float" around with high pressures...and susp. setup.
fun fun fun

That civic that your are talking about was at Summit Point for a Hyperfest event.
He did very well. Earning the respect of many purists. There should be coverage on the UsDrift.com site.
Yes there is more e-brake useage in a FF car but If you watch any incar video for a drift event its very evident that the FR drivers use it to initiate or even control many of their drifts. So as a FF AssDragger, I belive that true drifting is done with rear wheel drive, who cares its fun either way.

Thanks Tom
The Event Director of UsDrift and I go out and AssDrag our cars all the time. He drives a GTi and I have that Delslow. We know its not real "Drifting" I think its comparable to that argument of genuine wheels and Knock offs. If it does the same thing why should it matter?

yes...I saw a car at a hyperfest event for the drift contest ...it was a grassroots car, and I believe it was a honda/acura ...as far as I remember...
he also had spray tanks setup in his trunk to spray the wheels, but I don't think they let him use it.
EDIT: wait..if the tanks were spraying the rear wheels....maybe it was a RWD??
nevermind

I was at an autox practice, after we were all practiced out we threw 205 s-02's on the front and rear of my bro's s2k and went drifting around. Decided to try it in my Civic, the fun just wasn't there, just got too dificult. I wish understeer was "cool", my civic is the icon of understeering
drifting sharp turns, like a hairpin or 90 degree corner, is very fun in a fwd, imo. i just feint a little and trail brake and once the wieght is transfered i give a little tug on the e-brake. once into the drift i just pop the clutch and countersteer, but not much or u'll correct it too much.

could have been FWD, if they were spraying the rear wheels they might have been trying to get the *** wet so it would come around.. .. thats just a guess... me el no drifto

I seen FWD drifting on dirt, some videos I downloaded of VW rally cars. Never seen one drift on road. Is it done as smooth as RWD drifting? Seems like you would have to "snap" the rear end loose before you can start a slide?
Rob
Rob
With proper technique you can slide around a ff car just as smoothly as a rwd the biggest difference is that there is no power on oversteer. It is much easier when you have a huge rear swaybar, stiff rear suspension and a LSD. That way more corners can be connected in one continual slide. Your eventual set up would be similar to a Road racing set up.
Also to agree with the guy above, Yes many of us are stuck with a Civic that we bought for various reasons, But that should not deter you from having fun with whatever your car is. Hell I can have more fun in a rental car than my own. For different reasons but still fun.
Sometime in the future Ill post up some Vid of me and the AssDraggers.
That might quell some of the skepticism.

I discussed rear swaybars with a autocrosser before on FWD cars. Since your giving the car more over steer I wonder could you give the car even more with harder rear tires, more rear tire pressure, angles of rear wheels?

Exactly right.
I do have the rear tires set at full toe out for the events and run a 14' kuhmo all season at around 45psi. So your theory is correct. It helps. But for me they were free and well I might as well use them. Not really needed but useful.
FOR THE RECORD THAT IS NOT ME ABOVE ^^

It's easy to get the tail end to slide out - provided you aren't running goofy JDM spring rate set-ups.
Something totally streetable like 350f/450r or 400/500 and a 22mm swaybar out back and no swaybar in front will get you tons of lift throttle oversteer, even going around a corner too fast should swing the rear out... if that's what gets you your jollies...

I used to do that ALL in the time in my 95 coupe. Much fun, seriously, you can get good at it. I think the problem i was having the most was lack of speed on the exit. I could do 90 degree turns, hairpin, normal 180s, easy banked turns.. it was all fun.

how come you and me, Skye, always bring up the JDM spring rates in every suspension related thread

Glad to see this post is getting a lot of feedback...BUT, I didn't get very many "I'm in San D/ Orange County and drifting my FWD" type responses. Oh well.
Anyways, I can get my EG Coupe to slide. The problem is, as many of you know if you've tried this, is that the car loses speed. Drifting is controlled sliding through more than one turn, ideally, and that means you need some oomph to keep going. I guess my angle is to aggressive.
I'll be looking around here and there for any "***-swagging (hope I got that right..)." In the meantime, good luck, and slide your ride!
