I've seen that clip before. The most interesting part of that trick is that the "grip" guys AND the RWD driftors are going to disparage it. I think it looks like a tonna fun. Someday, I'll put some crap tires on the back of the Golf and sign up for an HPDE...

Dorifto suXors!

Just kidding. It is fun, I do a little bit of it at HPDE's in my R. I wish I had time and tires to do more, kinda, but I think that's what winter is for!

I'd be more impressed if he would do it without the e-brake. Toe out the front and trail brake, or just put cheap tires in back.

Edit: p.s. This is NOT the drift forum. GDD is the right place for this post.

you can do the inital oversteer with out e brake if the car is setup right. however to carry it you *have* to pull the ebrake at some point. there simply is no other way. you can see he runs fairly skinny rear tires and i'm sure they are not R tires like the fronts are.

That's not true.

On loose surfaces, FWD rally cars maintain those kinds of attitudes with regulation of throttle and left-foot braking. On tarmac, REALLY TALENTED rally drivers do the same thing - it's just a hell of a lot harder because the speeds have to be higher and the edge is WAY finer.

At an enduro in the rain at Seattle (now Pacific Raceways), I got so I could pretty consistently control that kind of slide in a slow corner (3B) but to do it in bigger turns takes bigger stones - and more talent.

It takes less talent if you're not too worried about hitting the apex or track-out. But yeah, I can't imagine doing it consistently or anything resembling fast.

i sorta agree/disagree... on rally tarmac they don't throw that big of a slide angle. and on gravel certainly it is a lot easier to keep the car side ways... if you can do a slide and control the drift angle at low speed, then in theory you can do it at higher speeds to. you just need more seat time. it takes the same talent to keep it sideways. now go practice more !

Man you must need a ton of grip in the front tires to hold your car in a drift like that. Pretty cool video overall, never seen a FWD do drifts before. But unfortunately, as good as FWD drifters are I don't think its ever going to beat RWD drifts just because of all they have to deal with compared with a RWD.

Video is really old, but if you haven't seen the spoon civic video. You should, track is wet and the first turn then drifts like ******* crazy!

He doesn't use it nearly as much as the average Civic driver trying to make cookies in the mall parking lot would, though. Really, he doesn't use it much more often than the RWD drifters, even. You'll see the handbrake come up from time to time in almost any in-car drift video, even the pro D1 guys.

Not me, do RWD donuts in parking lots. You know, reverse. I guess I am not the average parking-lot Civic d0rift0 king!

I agree, and I am still impressed. I couldn't do that today, with or without the e-brake, FWD or RWD.

Although, you know, doing all of that in reverse would be a fun trick! Need to fix the gearing first...

The first time I tried drifting in my EF (technically ED), I threw some 105/75-14s (spares) on the rear, and had my A032s up front. With no rear sway bar and stock rear shocks (ST front sway, AGX fronts, and Pro-kit all around), I could still drift without the e-brake. I was actually able to do it with one hand holding the driver door open. The key is braking the tires looks by entering a turn hot, and giving a touch to much steering to break the rear loose and then counter-steering through the turn. This season I've got the rear sway and shocks in (ST and AGX), I expect to be able to drift as well with all the tires equal. Really it's just giving the car enough momentum and commiting to turn. Most drivers are scared of the rear end coming around, but if you welcome it regularly, you'll be better off overall. Cool vid, but I'd prefer if there was no e-brake useage
