Default Using 5th at the strip??

I was at the track yesterday and I'm topping out 4th gear before I cross the 1/4 mile line (about 20ft). I see everyone say you should not boost in 5th, so what should I do?

some info:

USDM ITR tranny Quaife LSD
Drag radials
454whp (low boost setting)
redline 9300rpm
best run was
12.7@121

If I get traction in 1st and 2nd I'll definately need more gear or when I run my slicks.

Help is boosting 5th ok?

Or is this a stupid noob question!

You will need to raise your rev limit to probably 9600 or more

here is a gear speed calculator that is very helpful

I could but above 9000 rpm my power falls off. Not sure if it's because of the cams (ITR) or IM (skunk2) I'm running or....

if you run bigger slicks you will prob not need to shift into 5th. When I run my 205/50/15 bfg I have to shift into 5th right at the end of the 1/4 with slicks I am fine
I boost in fifth all the time. Have not blown anything up yet

even if the power falls off im sure its better than shifting to 5th. What size slicks do you have?

you should be running a lot better times then that. Even your mph seems low for that much power. On drag radials my best time was 12.6 @ 114 and on slicks 12.3 @112 and I only have about 280 to the wheels.

Passes were on Drag Radials and an unpreped track spinning 1st and 2nd like they did not even exist.

Ps This was my 3rd time at the track ever, so yes some issues are noob related.

Any advice you could give me please??

On the slicks, at your current 9300 rev limit you should be able to go 139-140 mph at the very top of 4th.

Just get some more seat time and everything should fall into place. If you are spinning that bad on the drag radials you need to maybe lower the boost in those gears. Id just go ahead and run the slick though with that power

I would not even run dr with that power. Unless you have to. But like the other guy said more seat time and lower boost in those gears would help.

What was your 60 foot times? Also how much pressure were you running in your DR?

It was the first day the track was open here in Ohio so I wanted to get a feel for it since I had only been twice before.

My plan is to run the slicks this coming sunday.

best 60ft was 2.2 at 16psi in the DR

Here's the slip:

From http://www.nationaltrailraceway.com/ Yesterday 4/3/2005

BFG Drag Radials
Running 15-16psi~454whp

R/T = .101
60ft = 2.247
330 = 5.983
1/8 = 8.639
MPH = 91.89
1000 = 10.904

1/4 = 12.757
MPH = 121.52

I was shifting into 5th on my drag radials and i ran 12.7 also. I spun through 1 and 2nd gear. I run 24.5 inch slicks but havent had a chance to run them yet. All my times have been on 22 inch slicks. So I think you will see improvement.

The slicks have a larger outer diameter. You should be able to trap around 135-140 in 4th at 9500 with that tranny on slicks.
