ok so a friend of mine has been using a P28 with a "mugen" chip and the car runs fine. he got ahold of another "mugen" chip and its causing his motor to ping. what could be the problem?

it has all CTR interals and P&P. running 92 octane with a holley fuel pump.

Where do they sell 92 octane in CA?

 

sounds like the timing is jacked up.

 

Or it is leaning it out real bad.

 

or a little of the two, i would check base timing, knock it back a degree or two see if it goes away, or throw some race gas in it and see if it clears up
