New to slicks, help
Ok guys first off I tried search didnt find what I needed, so, I have an ek coupe with ~400hp to the wheels, last year at the strip I ran no better than mid 13's which I know is terrible for that power level. I have an lsd and was running on neo gens, at 20ish psi, no traction till 3rd, anyways, this year I am looking to get a set of slicks to hopefully run some better times. My issue is, my car is pretty low and I cant afford to buy coilovers to raise it this year, my options are, either a 205/50/15 bfg drag radial or, a 23/7.5/15 m and h racemaster slick, I am leaning towards the slicks, but have had several friends tell me at that power level I wont gain much advantage on that size slick vs the radial, and the slicks are more expensive. Opinions, and preferably personal experience would be helpful, thanks guys.

Re: New to slicks, help
Honestly I probably will not increase the power, I'm lucky to still be able to keep the car at this point due to some changes in my living and financial situation recently, and I do not have a traction bar and probably wont get one anytime soon if ever.
My main concern is with the size a 23in slick is pretty small you guys think it will hook that much power?

Id say you would be fine with the 23's but if you can fit it, go with a 24.5. The slicks are a better idea since the radials are heavy and do not absorb any driveline shock and will more than likely hop like mad.
Also- When my car was making just over 400whp I was running 225-50-15 BFG drag radials at the track and didnt catch traction till the middle-to end of 3rd.

Re: New to slicks, help
I see these types of threads fairly regular, saying 24.5, that's not really an answer, the base factors have to be understood about the users car, any company selling slicks would ask at least a minium set of questions.
Is this possible?
I understand it's not an exact science but is it possible to have some rough (hypothetical) rule of thumb for power and appropriate slick size.
I understand there will be a difference between a 23" slick on a 13" and 15" wheel, same applies to width.
Equally, gear ratios will play a part, that said, a majority would be inclined to run a longer ratio box,
Boost by gear will mean you could run a smaller slick as you can get out of the box thus reduce the size of slick just to launch.
Class Turbo (average weight with supporting suspension modifications)
250-300
300-350
350-400
400-450
450-500
500-550
etc

Re: New to slicks, help
The slick (even at that size) will allow you to leave the line harder/quicker, as even if you don't make full power in the first two gears, you'll still be making 200wtq at least in those. The radial likely won't hold that easily in 1st and 2nd. The 23" slick will at least hold 3rd depending on torque, gearing, car weight, and track prep. The radial possibly won't.
I'd even go as far to say a 22" slick (13" wheel though) would net you .200 seconds quicker e.t.'s than that set of radials will. The 23" set (15" wheel) will likely be a bit better than that. 24.5" slicks would be ideal at that power level with a GSR trans (I'm casually assuming this is a B-series).
