MSD Ignition
So I have a built Naturally Apirated LSVTEC, Buddy Club SpecIV's, CTR Pistons etc, ARP etc, this is not a thread to flame on the LSVTEC. I'm wondering if I should stay with the stock coils or go with a box and coil from MSD or maybe even just a coil. I heard stock ignition is good for up to 400hp but I'm afraid with such high compression 12.68:1 with the thicker headgasket.

50% will tell you msd is good 50% will tell you msd is bad 50% will tell you nothing pertinent at all.
it works for some people, and not for others, me it has worked for 6+ years. with the exception of my coil crapping out on me thats the only issue i have had.
with that compression, i thikn you will need a hotter coil and a box wont hurt.

Yes and do a Digital box not that analog crap.

I have an MSD Digital 6 in my car. They can work well just make sure it is mounted in the car away from the ECU. I Have had this current box for about 5 years now.
Yeah but all you guys are a bazillion hp and run 9's. I'm thinking I don't NEED the box. Stock ignition though might not handle 8500rpm very well. I don't know 400 bucks for that box is steep.

So if you "think" you know what you need and what you're doing, why ask our opinions..

just wire in a backup..
they even have a friggen part to switch units. haha..they do what they are supposed to do but it's no secret that it is hit and miss with their products.
It's actually quite amazing how far of a gap you can jump with the box and a coil.
Does anyone know what generally goes bad in these units?
Might have something to do with the fact most people don't mount the box right, using isolators. I've also seen alot of peeple mess up the wiring, or not power the box from a fused source and burn the box up with a short in the wiring.
I don't have anything crazy for my car, just a 6al with a blaster 2 coil and its been kicking for some time. The last thing that went on me was my Blaster SS coil. I actually liked it but it was 9 at night the only place open that had MSD was Vauto Zone and sacrifices had to be made. So i went with a Blaster 2. 475hp T1 tuned btw.
Stock ignition and 448whp. I'm just concerned I'm going to have problems at 7500-8500 RPMS. Some people tell me I need MSD and some people say stock ignition. What are you revving to?
I personally used a stock ignition ro 9400 rpm's for over 100 passes and around 5k miles of driving plus a **** load of dyno pulls.
NO issues what so ever with it.
I now use an MSD for ignition because I have to so I can use the MSD multi stage retard box for timing control on the bottle and have 0 issues with it. Stock was perfectly fine though prior to the nitrous.

Jay,
I'm wondering if you could use a two-timer instead the msd. The two-timer changes the ecu map via switch. You could have a complete NA map and a Boost (NOS) map switchable via the nos switch.
To the OP, stick with the stock ignition.

Just stick with the stock ignition and run the correct spark plug for your engine combo. Then, get the car tuned on the dyno. You'll eventually answer your own questions/doubts about needing an ignition box.

You can control a single stage through crome pro that will both activate the nitrous off TPS and retard timing at the same time. I have more than one stage though and it's just easier to use all MSD components to remove additional timing when another stage comes on.
Plus Scott from P.I.G. paid for all of it for me so why turn down free parts that work great for the intended purpose

I ran my stock ignition to 9500 rpm's, 10.4 @ 140 2-3 years ago. I am a firm believer in a fresh OEM ignition system. I've since upgraded to individual coils using the autronic 500r. That is much nicer
