k coil dwell time settings
quick run down
aem v2
epm
k coils
b20b
I followed all of the directions and double checked all my connections tested for spark its all there.
I just cant get the motor to start and run. I messed with my cranking fuel settings taking out a lot of fuel and adding fuel. I still cant get it to start.
It will try to run but turns off and backfires out of the intake.
I took the gear off the epm and flipped it and it sounded worse. It was popping really loud out of the down pipe after letting go of the key. So I switched it back.
Im thinking its my dwell settings since the aem directions are for pencil coils and not k coils, anyone with experience let me know if you have any insight.
thanks
edit: solution to problem
if you're running the epm with k coils
dwell settings need to be for 01-05 civic in the wizard see pic below
sync initial ignition timing while cranking the motor and having the timing locked. Mine was at maybe 60 degrees btdc to sync the timing take an old spark plug wire peel off the boot and stick it into the coil, tape it to the coil so it stays put and attach the other end into the spark plug and the timing light goes onto the plug wire.
Batt needs to be fully charged while finding your base timing. Ping at aem said the coils need sufficient voltage to fire properly.
When connecting your coils to a switched 12v the existing power cable for the stock distributor will be fine.
My coils are grounded at the thermostat. Epm is at a chassis ground.
if you have a yellow wire at the epm its the same as the green wire in the epm instructions provided by aem.

Re: k coil dwell time settings
I get the back fire when I let go of the key only.
I set my crank injector time linear from 3000 to zero and found where it liked to start up using the tps.
It sarted to run then died. I thought it was maybe a dwell setting off.

Re: k coil dwell time settings
I looked in the aem file for a s2k and copied them. They were off from the settings aem gave me. Hopefully it starts when I get home.
The mechanical timing is good. Maybe off half a tooth the most I think less. . That shouldn't keep it from turning over.
I was reading to set the timing with the ems I need a plug wire but that's after I get it to run right?
Also my epm has a yellow wire. The aem instructions show green.

Re: k coil dwell time settings
Sounds like the "a tooth" is in the wrong spot. Take all the spark plugs out and put a timing light on Number 1. You are not even in the ballpark.

Ok after talking to j berta and aem I know now I need to
1 sync timing while cranking the motor over. (Didn't know timing would be so far off)
2) get resistor type plugs. The dummy at aem told me non resistor is fine.
3) set the dwell to the same as 01-05 civic in the wizard
4) batt needs to have a really good charge
Ill post up the results when I get the plugs and get home
This setup really needs a good write up

Re: k coil dwell time settings
GOT HER STARTED!!
I set the timing and was still off 180 because it kept popping pretty loud out of the exhaust this time.
advanced the timing another 180 and bam! Startedright up. Thanks again everyone in here.
just to recap
all jumpers in the aem guide are at 1-2
dwell for k coils need to be 01-05 civic in the wizard.
Need to sync timing BEFORE start up by cranking the motor first
Alo my epm has a white, yellow, red, black wire. In the aem guide the green is the yellow wire on our epm.
