The pump placement doesn't really matter so long as you've got it after a filter as TECH43 said. Most commonly we just mount them up front on cars with stock fuel systems (lines, filters, etc.) simply to get them inline after the filter. There is however less clutter when you mount them in the rear. Just my $0.02 tho, good luck
Well, I am not the hugest drag racer in the world but I do have a Fuel Cell in a street driven '86 Prelude Si. Its a pain..the old tank had about 1000 pin hole leaks in it, and it would cost over 400 for a new tank. So hello Summit 16 Gal fuel cell. Anywho. I plumbed one of the pickups through a filter, and then to the pump as close as possible because I have always heard "It is better to push fuel than to pull it." And, did you have An fittings on the filter and the pump? Because it costed me 40 dollars for 2 fittings for -8AN to 3/8 NPT hose because i just used a brand new oem replacement pump. Mounted under the tire hump in the trunk.
It also sucks driving around everyday without a fuel gauge..you have to do fuel math.

this may be a dumb question but i need to make sure i have it right. that pic shows that the return line goes to the top of the cell. isnt that the vent? the way i have it now is the sending line coming out of the left outlet at the back bottom and the return line coming in the right side at the back bottom

so i'm alright having both of the lines beside eachother? i figured it would be better since it will be putting fuel back in the tank right where it needs to go out

i dont think i need a weldon pump just yet
so i need a little more help. everywhere i searched i found that i should tap into the yellow/green wire for the power to the pump. but i dont see a yellow/green wire from the connector that went to the stock pump. theres 4 wires. yellow/black, yellow/white, black, black/white. does anyone know which one i need to tap into? should i use the black wire as my ground? or just ground it to the chassis?
btw - this is a 90 Civic DX hatchback

I'm not sure with your car...but it used to have an in-tank pump right? Well if your old wires went to the top of your tank one of them might have been your sending unit wire, for your gauge. ANd one for your pump..not sure. but I would see if they both have juice when you turn the key on, it will be powered for a few seconds, use a tester. if the other one is constant when you turn your key on, then that is probably a sending unit wire or something. But crank the engine over and whichever one is getting juice when the engine is cranking, but when you stop cranking it only has juice for a few more seconds, that is your pump wire...wow I hope that made sense. I had this problem with my CRX but all I did was hook it up with from the fuseblock with a switch and a fuse, and use a switch to turn the pump on. keep me posted..
