Default Engine sleeving question/opinion

I've searched but can't find a specific answer. I want to sleeve my LS for my ls/vtec so that when I boost it I know that it will be more reliable than the stock sleeves but everyone wants $1200 for the sleeves and installation. Now, I've found the darton 81mm sleeves for $650 shipped and my question is, can a normal (well known in area) machine shop install the sleeves because they are only boring the old sleeves out and pressing the new ones in. So do you guys think that it is ness. to send my block to Cali. for this process or can my local guy do it so that I can save $400-500 ? Thanks

Well guys... this car isn't like a high end race car, it will be more like a toy/hobby for driving to work, racing on the week-ends, just having fun with it but, I do want to boost it and would like to make 300-400 hp and if I can do this reliablely without sleeves I might give it a try. I just don't want to build the bottom-end, leave the sleeves out and that be the breaking point....so I'll check around for pricing and get everyone's opinion on this then make up my mind. Thanks for your posts.

Been there done that with our first block. We learned, we sent that block and another block to Darton to have them remove the sleeves from the first block and install them in the the second block. Yea, that saved some money...

PM Rota92 he can get you a better deal.

Have you downloaded the install manual for the sleeves and checked out the tolerances? Do your local machine shops have a cnc machine to install the sleeves? Bottom line send your block out and have them do it.

What area are you located in? I can recommend a reputable shop that can take care of what you need.

We have tried several different sleeves for our race car. I would highly recommend Darton Sleeves MID kit for a race motor. we will only run Darton now !

We use Darton Sleeves in all our builds. There are Darton Sleeve machinists that can do the work in both coasts. ERL Performance in PA, Darton themselves or you can send to us, we have qualified machinists that are Darton trained to install sleeves for us.

ALWAYS use qualified places to do the installation. Its best to do it at a place than has experience. Also when checking prices, see if that includes the Final bore, hone and deck. A "low price" can be misleading and if it doesnt include those, it can cost you an additional $200-300 to get that done.

OP, Go with either Golden Eagle or Darton sleeves. Like Darton said if you want a closer shop thats in your area, then Darton should be your choice. I personally have always used Golden Eagle, you can pm Robert, I know he's on here. If I'm not mistaken it should be no more than 1100 for sleeves, install, final bore & hone, step deck, hot tanked and shipping. I myself have a couple of b18's over in their shop as we type. Best to you with your sleeving venture.

i'm very scared to mess with any local shops after they had a block for a customer of mine for four months, then called to say they couldn't do it.this is supposed to be the best shop for imports around here,BTW.
after this,i called Rob at GE.he took care of me,and the turnaround time was even faster than what he told me it would be.the work was top notch too.

All the shops we recommend are all reputable shops. We would never risk our customers blocks at a shop that we could not certify to do the job correctly.
