Engine Break-in/Oil Used?
I just built my engine for a turbo setup and am looking for input on methods of breaking in the engine and also what type of oil you guys are running.
I thought about using cheaper oil and heat cycling the engine and then changing the oil to what I would use (thinking AMS oil 5w-40) and putting the car right on the dyno and running the engine like it is going to be ran.
I've read mixed reviews on zinc and that it is no good but again I am looking for personal experiences.
Thanks in advance for the help!

Re: Engine Break-in/Oil Used?
why do people use SAE-30 oil for break ins? what are the major benefits? as far as I know SAE-30 is a very thick oil and is designed to be used in higher temperatures. another concern I have is would it change anything if I use a light oil such as 5w20 for the first 30 minutes of startup of a newly built engine, drain it, and then put in the SAE-30 non detergent oil for the next 500 miles?

Re: Engine Break-in/Oil Used?
I've always used the first 10w30 oil I came across for start up, heat cycle and a few revs then change to castrol or rotella t 15/40. Drive to the dyno and beat the *** off it.

Re: Engine Break-in/Oil Used?
I have 3000 miles on my new short block. I used Castrol 10w-30 for the first 20 minutes. Then changed the oil and filter, put in Castrol 10w-30 for the next 500 miles of street driving, stay off the highway, drive on back roads, it's better for the rings.
At 500 miles change oil and filter with castrol 10w-30 and had Tuner street tune the car to make sure every thing is fine, I had the heads ported other then that every thing else was the same.
Drove the car as my DD for the next 1000 miles then changed the oil and filter and used the same 10w-30, drove another 1000 miles and put in Amsoil 5w-40 European oil. I'll go to 5000 mile oil change intervals now.
My other car is on the same oil. BTW this is in my 2005 Subaru Legacy GT wagon making 280whp to all 4 wheels. My other car is a 2009 Subaru Spec B. The wagon is my DD, plan to be driving it for a long time.
I chose the European 5w-40 because its designed for boosted engines, much the way Rotella t6 and Rotella 15w-40.
Lot's of guys use the t6 and Castrol Edge in there turbo Legacy's. The main thing is to do regular oil + filter changes.

Re: Engine Break-in/Oil Used?
We use cheap Advance Auto oil for most engine break-in's.
The engine is started, warmed up to operating temp, then backed onto the dyno. We do a little fixed-RPM loads, then do a couple 2,000 RPM to 4,000 RPM or so sweeps at WOT.
Oil/filter gets changed, then it's straight to the normal tune procedure.

Warmup and some light rpm/load on some regular auto parts store oil. Drain oil and replace filter. Toss in some mobil 1 5-30 and a honda filter and go straight to the dyno. Gatta get those rings to seal ASAP!!!!

Re: Engine Break-in/Oil Used?
FWIW, Mobil1 5w-30 has been shown to break down to a 5w-20 in a short period of time. Most guy's on the Subaru forums with turbo's say to stay away from it. Mobil1 10w-30 is a much better product.
But basically use a good oil and get it out of there after the first 20 mins. That has been the norm for a very long time. That's what I was told when I rebuilt my first engine back in 1975.

I see that all of you guys down South are posting about Brad Penn, since the temperature and humidity are drastically different up North would yall still recommend using the Brad Penn? I understand it is manufactured in central PA (where I go to school lol) but I have heard mixed reviews about E85 and the Brad Penn oil, any imput?

Re: Engine Break-in/Oil Used?
Break it in on some "el" chepo non detergent or use some Royal Purple break in oil. Then swith it over to some Torco, Redline or Valvoline of the engine builders choice. The engine builder should have gave you all these details.
