Hi guys I am interested in swaping my B16 turbo to a K20 turbo and going AWD too on my EF.
My particular concern is what rear differential to use.
I can easily find modern CRV diffs but are they strong enough for drag? 1000whp setups....are they being used on the high powered cars??
I know some of them are using the old wagon diff but for me to find one is difficult on my location and if it breaks makes it more difficult to replace, etc
Would be best to go 8.8" but that would make car full 4wd and completely solid(no viscous)....and probably for the street it would wind up to go to drag race.
I need your help and opinion guys?

 

I've heard the wagons are the strongest but others are using CRV as well.

 

some guys are using crv with success, but they are limited to around 500-600 from what ive seen. Any car making 800+ for any length of time is using a wagon diff. If you can wait, fcs is planning to release a cast iron rear diff although i dont know when.

So wagon is stronger by far. But does the wagon diff have a viscous like the modern CRV or no ?.... if no than I can fit an 8.8 IRS which has no viscous and put all the power i want and not worry
that I will break it. I am planning on over 1000whp so CRV is out of the question.

 

I think the Section 8 Civic Hatch was at 1300 with the Wagon Diff, are you running B or K?

I've been following the AWD wave the past year, some people are getting a VC from Freelander and modifying it to fit the Honda drivetrain. Theres an AWD Honda FB page that has a lot of helpful info. i think PPG just released a dog box application for the CRV B-series trans

 

Great info guys. Yes a good solution would be to go for a Freelander viscous coupler and fit to driveshaft but would not be strong enough for drag. Solid would be best for drag IMO. I am the still thinking of going for an 8.8" IRS with a suitable Final drive ratio
as a wagon diff is out of question for me to source one in Europe and shipping costs are high. Now looking who will make a CRV and transfer case billet for the K

 

Mods, Wouldn't it make sense to have a AWD section at this point?

About the wagonvan rear diff. isnt it a few % different turning ratio/multiplier from the crv? Wouldnt this potentialy cause some problems?

 

If you skip a center diff solution I would think that the transfer case and drive/bell housing will take alot more beating and just looking at it I doubt it will hold. But I would love it if it will hold. I think it was drag cartel that makes a billet transfer case and stronger gears for it or if it was prayoonto.. That combined with a billet 4wd trans bell housing might be the ticket.. I think you have to accept that a honda 4wd drive train for these platforms are not bulletprof and you have to treat it that way.. Look at the drag cars running 4wd how they take off and how the top FWD cars take off at the drag strip.. You have to adapt to keep it together..
