Do these sun roofs retract back (like the 84-87 crx si's) or do they just pop up like a cheap universal sunroof?

well, they were only available 86-87 cause the civic Si wasn't available in 85. now, it does just pop up but it is glass, not to mention it is fully removeable for open air-ed-ness. almost as good.

And yeah, being able to remove it is almost as good as being a slider.

I probably removed mine probably a couple dozen times the entire 8 years I had mine. It would rain every afternoon (costal FL) so if it was out, and it rained you were screwed.

If you were good, you could remove and install it without getting out of the driver's seat.

i remove mine every time i cruise the mountains. it's only slightly less convenient than a miata with a roll bar.
