'88 Accord - Fuel Issue?
Hey guys,
First off, I know this forum is pre-88, but the Accord forum is post-89, so I was stuck in the middle. And you guys are nicer.
I'm thinking about buying this for my dad. http://southbend.craigslist.org/cto/3172919817.html
It looks really well kept for its age, and has relatively low miles. It sounds, however, like it has a fuel delivery issue.
"Problem:
Everything works great including heat(only on high), but it wont stay started to heat up. It can go down the road but need to give it gas to get it up. It has to be something internal and we have done enough." - Seller
My Accord was a '90, fuel injected, and had issues with the main relay. But then I thought I remembered someone telling me that the pre-90 Accords didn't have a main relay. They didn't list a trim level, either. I know the LXis were fuel injected.
Thoughts? I won't be able to see the car until next weekend, as I live several states away, but I'm hoping it's a quick fix.
Thanks, guys. Stay awesome.

Re: '88 Accord - Fuel Issue?
Streetside,
I've owned an '88 and '89 fuel injected Accord LXi, and they definitely have main fuel relays. They usually fail after "hot soak"- car starts and runs ok, is turned off and left in the sun, and won't restart. The trick to change the relay is to just replace the inside, using the same housing. Disconnect the connector, spread the case, and pop the old innards out. Sounds easy, but it's located high up under the dash. on the left side wall. This could be a fuel supply problem-filter or fuel pump. Find out the trim, and any more details they can provide as to what they have checked. I'd also get the compression checked to make sure that's ok. Good luck!

Check fuel pressure. And it can be a # of thing more detail.does it stay running with foot on the pedal? If its smoke out the tail pipe? What color is the smoke? What does it sound like.
