Default 1st gen CRX Speedo Cable

Haynes says you have to remove the steering wheel before removing the instrument cluster. I only get a chance to work on the car for about half an hour at a time, so I want to make sure I don't start something I'm going to have to leave in a mess.

It looks to me as though I can just remove the cluster to get to the speedo cable. Does anybody know?

Maybe I should check this first: theres a squeaking/squealing noise coming from pretty much right in front of me that seems to be based on speed, not vibration. It does sound like something that's spinning and needs lubrication, and it happens when the ventilation fan is off (it's way over on the other side anyway, isn't it?) That's why I'm guessing it's the cable.

Thanks - I had a better look - it's pretty straightforward.

I had to drop the column on my 87 CRX Si to gain enough clearance to get the cluster bezel out, which also houses the heater control, so the cable to the heater box has to be disconnected as well. There isn't much wire slack, so disconnecting the wire harness at the heater control is awkward to say the least.

you can do it with out removing the steering wheel.it can be kinda hard to pull the speedo cable out of the back of the cluster from the sides or the top, so a little trick i learned was to go from underneath the dash, there's plenty of room to remove it that way.GL

slight thread jack but did you ever do this? I only get to work on mine for 30-60 minutes at a time as well which sucked cause I had to do a clutch/flywheel lol. My speedo came out on its own, think its still good to put back into the cluster? I have to wire my pin connectors and my crx is driveable again!!!

I haven't done it yet. It occasionally squeals when I'm driving, but since right now it's up on stands I'm not driving it! I have some bodywork to do, then I'll probably get to it.
