AWD Conversion ForumThis forum is to help with the recent advent of new AWD conversions. Got a question? Ask it here. Got an answer? Drop the knowledge here
(This subject is kind of broad, apologies if it's not in the correct section. The main topic is custom Axles, but it also involves the topics of K-swap and AWD Conversion Parts. Please move if needed.)
I am currently in the process of fabricating motor mounts for my Mid-Engine K24 CRX project. I've seen it done before, but most of the builds involve welding the front crossmember and suspension into the trunk, which seems heavy, time consuming, ugly, and likely to handle poorly. The only other way I've seen it done is to back-half or full tube chassis the car and just hang the engine wherever.
I'd like to keep as much stock as possible, reinforcing and bracing the stock framing and crossmembers, and using as many factory parts as I can to keep costs low.
I see lots of AWD guys running Civic/Teg trailing arms with the front Insight hubs, and then mating them with 23 spline rear axles from the civic wagon or CRV. I've also seen some people use D series cups with RSX axles to convert to 23 splines.
In order to make sure the motor mounts are in the proper place, I want to get my axles nailed down first so I can install them and check my positioning. The track width of the front wheels of a CRX and RSX are nearly identical. I'm thinking RSX axles with a swapped outer cup, but I'm not super informed on Honda Axle builds... does anyone have any insight (pun intended) or recommendations?
Insight axles are awkward because of the offset location due to the electric motor, but the outer cup looks like it may be able to swap to an RSX axle. D series axles (maybe CRX?) may fit using the whole axle and just swapping the inner cups to RSX or other K Series Inner Cups... again, thoughts? Recommendations? CRV outers? Element Outers? Wagon outers?
There is a "You Pull It" yard near my house where I can buy cheap used axles to test out. Willing to try and fail a few times and post my findings in case it's useful to anyone else.
(Also, posting a picture because I know people are going to ask 🤣 Axle location is just ahead of rear crossmember, similar to rear diff axle location for AWD swaps. Just barely clears each frame rail without needing modification. Serpentine belt will just clear the wall of the frame and floor pan.
