What do you think about JL audio components?
I am a newbee to this forum. I havent cared much in the past about car audio but lately it has become a desire. My buddy can get phat hook ups on components, anything from JL to MB quart, etc. He recommended the JL audio because of the price, and since its not going to be a competition car. I was thinking of the xr series..any opinions would be great.

Since you have a massive hookup, let him look into Diamond Hex components... they're winning awards faster than JL and Quarts

I'm an audio noob myself, but when researching "bang for the buck" components, I heard nothing but good things about the XR's. Apparently they have an awesome tweeter, and sound great, price not even considered. These will be what I purchase when I put my system together (soon hopefully).

Re: What do you think about JL audio components? (acuraholic)
So far I am leaning towards the jl xr series, mb quart q series, or the focal 165k2. My friend has a business installing car audio and he says focal is the ****! As far as amps I am thinking kicker, fosgate, or phoenix gold..

Have you listened to the Focals or the Quarts? Their tweeters are extremely bright. I'd recommend an extended listening session before dropping money on these.

the midbass on my hex's arent that bad. i admit its not great, but its not lacking much. i have heard several jl XR's and i feel that they're bright and lack some midbass also. but how many of the midbass's on the market have an adequate amount of midbass?
on the crossovers of the focals and quarts, their are tweeter adjustments from 0db - -3db. some of the quarts can go down to -6 db. i guess they know that their **** is bright.

I sold my HEX's for this reason only...no midbass and while it wasn't the BEST install, the door was deadened and sealed pretty darn well. Glad to hear someone got midbass out of those things (BTW are they the German ones built by Eton?)

i have no clue who made them. if it helps to identify them, i got them mid last year. all i know about diamond is that they bought the D7 line of amps off of Esoteric. wut ever happened to them. the only products i ever see from them is freaking wires. i hope thats not all they sell now... wires and ****.

The etons are VERY deep and about 4-5 years old IIRC, while the newer sets have the chrome magnets and are very shallow. Absolutely beautiful looking drivers though. I always thought it was a shame to throw that basket and magnet in a door when they look so nice.
The newer ones are the S600s while the older models have a totally different naming structure. The crossovers are also clear acrylic (sp?) while the newer hex have the aluminum crossover casing (another work of art by diamond).

i must agree, diamond drivers and crossovers are nice. i like the way u connect the wires into the speakers. screw type terminal. the new focal 165kp2, different from 165k2, are very nice looking drivers.
to answer ur question about the eton made ones, no theyre not. if theyre 4-5 years old i was only starting to drive and didnt know too much about car audio.

What AMP would you suggest to run a component set? I was thinking kicker, fosgate, or phoenix gold.

neither, and running a 600-700 watt 4 channel is point less. if there is one it would cost way too much. depending on how much u want to spend, it sounds like u have money to spend on a nice amp. my favorite amp is the ARC audio 4150, i used to own one but had some financial issues to settle so i had to sell it. hopefully soon ill be able to get another one. i sell them by the way so if u decide to get one, i guarantee that i have the lowest prices on arc amps. the arc is about 650 shipped. for all the info look here http://www.arcaudio.com

Thanks for the info, but I dont have that kind of $$ to spend on an amp. I am getting the major hook up on all this stuff, that is the only reason I am doing it.
