Default Weird speaker problem?

This may be an easy one for you speaker gurus . . .

I just bought a 2000 cx. It only has 2 front speakers. Both have never simultaneoulsy worked. I installed a cd player and the pass side speaker is messed. I know the speakers and cd player are in good shape.

Here is the weird part: if I turn the balance all the way to the left (driver side) the front driver side speaker will work fine.

Then if I try to balance it at 0 (both speakers) they will both become crackling and distored.

Thanks in advance

maybe a bad connection...check and see if the clip/wire came disconnected on the speaker...or check to see if theres a nic in the wire and its touching metal..i had the same problem and i found out that a wire was niced and was grounding out under my dash....
