Default Theoretical Subwoofer Question

Say you've;

1) got a car with a trunk and rear deck, standard sedan or coupe...

2) a box so big that the sub must be aimed upward,

How do you think having the sub firing at the rear deck will make it sound?

marginally worse? significantly worse? same?

what if the rear deck has no speakers in it?

What if you add a port to the box, which direction would you say is best to aim the port?

actually i had my 2 15s firing up under the rear deck to get them to fit in the trunk of my ej1. the only issue i had was when i really turned up the bass boost, my rear deck would vibrate uncontrollably and start to tear to pieces if ur pretty **** about rattle, it can get annoying when u crank it up. and dont even bother running speakers in the rear deck if ur using large subs in that configuration cause my 6.5s were completely drowned out.
i later ran the same box ported tho with the ports facing towards the back seat and they sounded great with the seats down, pretty much the same as any simple ported enclosure.

As long as the speakers "bubble", [dome above cones diameter is not interfered with, it will not sound a lot diff. then if facing backwards or forwards or side ways, the "mechanical phase" will be different.
It will definitely sound better with the rear speakers removed, [that would be the case no matter what way it was facing].

Because of the amount of air the sub will move it will turn the rear speakers into passive radiators, they will move and make sound even if disconnected and would actually sound better disconnected then if connected, when connected they will be trying to reproduce high-pass or full range frequencies and the sub will force them to try and reproduce low-pass, [sub bass].

It makes no diff. what moves the speakers cone, if the cone moves it will make sound.

Adding a port to a sealed box can be very tricky to get right, you will need to find out what size of box is needed and it's port volume for the sub that you have, just cutting a hole in the box and shoving a pipe in it is unlikely to work, [unless you get very lucky] anyway.... a vent, [port] should be on the same plane, [surface/side] as the sub. 94

I would do a ported box and have the port on the pass. side facing the rear of the car. the reason for that being that it gives the sounds waves more time to develop before they get to your ears. and yes you are going to have a ton of rattle even if it is a brand new car. So I would use dynomatt or for something cheaper and pretty much the same thing Phatmat.

thanks for the replies you guys.

and as for the ported box, i used win isd to get some measurements.

got a pretty nice plan for a box that would have the woofer tuned to about 36hz.

I was just wondering which direction would be best to face the port if i were to fire the woofer upward.

it would be best to do it where they both face the same direction but i think having the port towards the rear in your case would cause less rattle and a better sound.
