Default Testing neons w/o transformer?

My neons are not working right now. i just brought back the transformer to get a new one. I would like to check to see if the neons actually work right now w/o the transformer. With the two wires the connect to the transformer, can i connect one to the accessory wire that leads to the switch and ground the other neon wire? If not how? And is this safe?

You will most likely under power them and most likely damage them. Transformers are there for a reason and I wouldn't recommend it.
