Default testing an amp for spikes

I have good reason to belive my amp's power supply has gone to shyt, but I wanna make sure before I buy a new one. It seems to burn the voice coils out of subs, but it doesn't render them totaly useless, as they still play sound up to the point the amp shuts itself off due to over current. I can smell a strong burnt smell in the voice coil. Anyway, I have no idea what to look for when testing an amp for whatever's causing it to do this (I was told it could possibly be spiking). I have a digital multimeter and scope, but I was just wondering what to do to see if it really is the amp that's blowing my subs.
