subs out in the cold (winter time worries)
Here's the deal. I just moved back home after being on my own for a year, and will be here at least until early summer. I have since sold my Integra and removed the $8k system I built and installed in it and have not yet been able to reinstall into my Jeep. Anyway, I just had a 8x10 steel storage shed built outside our house to keep all my bins and boxes. I still have 5 subs and 4 amps and lots of other equipment to store, but wondering if putting them out in this shed is a bad idea as far as temperatures go. I live in CT and it will easily get down to the teens to twenties during the winter. Obviously they'd get pretty cold just sitting in the car, but will the cold of winter hurt the subs?

I would keep them in your closet or under your bed. I not a fan of keep stereo equipment in the freezing cold. The moisture that comes from the cold is not good for electronics. Rust and brittle circuits boards are not good.

well, the thing is there is just so damn much and my new room (my sisters old room) is only 8'x10' and I have a queen size bed now, synthesizer, keyboard amp, two computers and a desk. there is literally no room in the closet or under bed. I don't even have a dresser. I have at least one full bin (30 gallon) full of misc. stereo accessories. I really don't like the idea of keeping them out either, but I don't know what other options I may have.

My equipment has been installed in my cars since '98, and has endured 8 Upstate NY winters and I've had no problems... If the stuff is in totes or covered bins, and protected against the weather you'll have no problems in the spring...
If you're that concerned, put a dessicant (silica gel) in each bin before you put the lid on... That'll absorb any moisture in the air...

Agreeing with previous posts, putting them in the cold would be a bad thing basically only due to the moisture which would come from condensation when it would warm up. But my speakers stay in my car the entire year and that is the same as being outside obviously. In my case I turn the radio on very low when I first turn it on when it's cold out, lets the amp and the speakers warm up a bit before hitting hard so it doesn't stress them out since they're stiff from being cold, in your situation I would take the above post and put some silica gel in the totes to secure moisture and try to refrain from putting the speakers down on the magnet so they don't get warped by their own weight, if possible lean them on the edge and don't let anything cause pressure on them.

Re: (bart2546)
yes, but I can have them sitting on the bottom with the magnet side down (speaker facing up) with no problem right? they are actually currently still in custom plexi and MDF boxes that I had them in my my Integra, so really no reason to remove them other than the moisture

If they're still in your speaker box, yea I wouldn't really worry about it, but my personal preference would be to lay the box on it's side away from the wall so that they don't have their own weight pulling down on them through the temp. changes.
