Default Sub Enclosures

I searched for something like this and also I dont know if this is the best section to post but here it goes..

I have 1 10" kicker sub and a kenwood amp in my car, im getting 1 more of each pretty soon here and what I want is to have a custom enclosure built for my 93 civic hatchback. I just think the sub box I have is too tacky and needs to go. I have seen a lot of enclosures built out of fiber glass and has plexi-glass with neon and looks really good and all. I just wanna know how to or where to have this done. I already have an idea of a layout for all this I just need to figure out how to build it or get it built. I have searched online and found nothing so if anyone knows how to do this or knows a place/site that does do this, please let me know id really appreciate it. I live in orange county, CA if that matters.

Here are some pictures to give an idea of what im looking for except id like plexiglass, mirrors and neon incorporated in my enclosure.

something like that is not a first time project. take it to a shop that does reputable work.

yup...but you're nowhere close to toronto so i'd say simply shop around. go to all the local shops. they've usually got pics of the work that they've done.

Thanks, I called up a shop I've been to call Super Autobacs. They apperently make enclosures just like those. I thought that you had to go to a specialty shop or something. But anyways, thanks for the help.

one thing i really think you should keep in mind is with an enclosure like that is you really have no flexibility as far as changing amps and speakers and such. i would make sure you're entirely happy with your setup before going that route.

not really. to replace somethings when it is in a fiberglass enclosure like that basically means to brek open the fiberglass to get at the screws and stuff (someone correct me here if i'm wrong). one thing you also have to consider is the cost of an enclosure like that. i know i went to a shop here and they wanted 500 bucks for a simple 2 sub enclosure. this was NOT including an amp wrack or anything like that. you also lose all your trunk room and if you get a flat you better belong to AAA or something to come tow your car. they look really cool and stuff but for the price and sacrifices you have to make i personally would not go with one.

i just got all the components for my new system and am going to build my own little box/amp rack for it. it's going to be out of wood though. i think it definately adds more flare when you do it all. once the summer gets here i'm going to experiment with fiberglass.

Bahaha!

I don't think that's what he meant - you can surely mount subs in there and take them out without breaking your enclosure.

He means that once it's built, you're done. You will have that specific Volume enclosure, that specific type, and with that specific cutout diameter for your woofer. Why does this matter?

Not all woofers, even of the same size, are suitable for the same size enclosure. Now it is true that you can find a woofer with similar size requirements and you'll prob. be fine, but to say that just any other 10" woofer will work = idiotic. Must also consider that some woofers are shallow and some have insanely deep baskets (mounting depth).

It's obvious that you want a flashy install. I don't know what advice I can give here...I rarely see a flashy install that I've liked. Even the competitors - I can't say many of them have impressed me... So what if your interior and sub enclosures are shiny and smooth, and so what if it looks clean - they are reflective surfaces...a real SQ install would be quite the opposite, in my book.

Uhm, so in closing: Perhaps design the enclosure to maintain flexibility, as EBP suggested. Also, choose a nice woofer setup, make sure the enclosure is SOLID/BRACED, and you can make it look nice, but please don't value that over the objective (sound).

im actually fine with the 1 sub/amp I have. I said 2 because I plan on getting those after xmas. But I would like 2 just to give it that extra bump ya know. Cuz the way I see it, its all about self interest right? I like how my sound system sounds and all and I really dont plan on going out there and getting the best of the best just to be able to say hey, I have the best. The best to me is whatever I think works best with me. So I dont think ill be getting anything different when it comes to subs and amps. Hope that made sense lol.

you're happy now but sooner or later everyone gets bored of what they have and want a change (last year i went through 7 sets of main speakers at home). I just dont see the sense in going to that extent just so it can look cool. maybe its me, i like stuff that is purely functional. what about a false floor setup. you can still do the plexiglass and the neons and suff but they wont cost nearly as much in fact one of those is a pretty good first glass project. with one of those too you'll still have a totally useable trunk and should you decide to...you can sell it reasonably easy.

yeah thats kinda what I want to do. I cant really describe what it is exactly that I want. But I dont like the complete fiberglass molding. I just want the fiberglass molding to help fit and mold the plexiglass to the rest of my car. So it would be a flat surface to have a trunk . Cuz right now I dont really have a trunk because of the subwoofer box I have. I can barely put a backback in there. I have to move the box so its off center.

But I think im going to draw out what I want so the guys at the shop know what it is I want. and ill post it up here to get opinions/suggestions I guess.

Oh, just as a visual, it would be something like the second pic I posted, the purple one. little more plexiglass, blue painted fiberglass, and blue neon .. But I dont have nitrous and dont plan on getting it for a while lol

going ot be crazey expensive, i was in this guys car who works at tweaters, think he had like a pheonix 500 or something, it was where his spare was, had alot of custom work with plexiglas, about 4 amps all cut into his trunk, a buncha speakers custom fabbed upfront, all together was like 18g.
