Ok so my 93 civic has an aftermarket Soundstream speaker system installed, which consists of two 180 watt speakers in the front (one in each door) and two 300 watt speakers in the rear (mounted above back seat, below rear glass). I want to get an amp and wire it to all 4 speakers. Any recommendations of what amp to get? Also will i need a 4 channel amp, or can i do it with a 2 channel amp? Thanks!

 

Yes you will need a 4 channel amp. I'm going to guesstimate that your speakers are going to be rated in the neighborhood of 75 watts RMS per speaker. That being said, you would be looking for an amp that is 75 watts RMSx4, or 300 watts RMS.

As far as what make/model/brand to get.....everyone is going to name every amp under the sun as their favorite. I have always told customers that a decent amp is going to cost you around the $0.25 or more per watt when looking at MAX RMS ratings. If you venture down to your local shop and someone is trying to hustle you a 2000 watt amp for $150, realistically that amp should be closer to $500 if it was any good.

Okay thanks man. Not sure if this is right but i found the speakers online and it says the two 180 watt speakers have an rms of 100 watts, and the two 300 watt speakers have an rms of 150 watts. so will i need to buy an amp that can send different amounts of watts to seperate channels? Ex. 100 watts to two of the channels, and 150 watts to the other two channels.

 

In theory you are correct. But actually a bit of advice here, do not get an amp that matches your RMS watt rating.
This seems like the way to roll but hear me out, I have done this for a long time and have many good installs under my belt.
Get an amp that is at least 25% higher in RMS output than your speakers. The BIG reason for this is THD (total harmonic distortion). All amps have distortion and above the 75% output of an amp you begin to get into some ugly stuff. This will certainly destroy your speakers when cranked and just sounds like garbage. It is soo much better to have more headroom in the amp and set it up so the gain is not maxed out. This will never put the amp into overload/overheat or clipping that will blow your speakers when abused in that region.
This will also allow you to upgrade your system latter once you realize those 75 dollar speakers are crap. A real speaker will have a very large magnet structure (2lbs or greater) and will cost like 75$ each or better. Those will last and give great high level listening for years, not weeks.

 

i see, that makes sense. ill look into a stronger amp. just curious, at my work they have a 400 watt 2 channel amp kicking around that i could probably get for dirt cheap sinse they have no use for it (its a tire shop), is there any way to use this amp with my 4 speakers or is that not possible?

Technically yes you can..........but the way you would have to connect the speakers it would reduce the power output of the amp by about 1/2. Moral of the story, the amp would be putting out about the same amount as an aftermarket radio, so why go though the trouble and cost lol?
