speakers with a stock headunit
Hey guys,
I was just trying to get some feedback if it would be worth for me to change my stock speakers in my 97 integra sedan without buying a new headunit or amps for a better quality sound. If so, could you guys please give some suggestions of what type of speakers to get.
Thanks,
Will

I would upgrade your speakers & keep the stock headunit. You will get better sound by upgrading. After owning several Hondas & being in the car audio scene for almost 8 yrs, I have noticed that Honda uses cheap paper cone speakers. These speakers tend to wear out quickly and cannot handle loud volumes.
Depending on what you want to spend on new speakers, just about any upgrades would do. When I worked in the car audio retail world, I mostly sold JL Audio & Boston Acoustics for upgraded systems. Right now, I am in the process of redoing my car & just for sound, I am using a pair of Memphis 6.5 coaxials in my doors. They dont sound bad, just a little too high on the upper end yet they have some decent mid bass. These will be going back into the closet once I get my kick panels done.
Its up to you on how much you want to spend & whether or not you want to upgrade your radio & speakers. Honda makes nice radios that have good sound, but their speakers (IMO) are too cheap & dont sound that good.
Good Luck in upgrading to the best sound possible.

yeah it'll sound better but your factory headunits amp isn't that big so i'd go with some cheapo aftermarket speakers that don't require much power. and idteg, i don't know of ANY factory speakers that don't have a papercone. even bose systems have paper cones. Honda actually uses pioneer and bose to make their systems. but anyways, i would change the deck first, and then speakers. and then if its still not good enough, get a sub.

But when you upgrade the source, it will make a much bigger diff. even with the oem speakers, and then if you upgrade the speakers you have the source to drive them.

There will be a noticable difference though. Stock decks only put out about 15- 20 watss max rms but the shitty papercone speakers that come in any car factory are trash. Any A/M speaker will sound better than stock even if you don't change the deck

Changing out the speakers will definitely make a difference in sound. Stick with the stock HU if replacing it is not in the budget. The stock HU is okay, but naturally the aftermarket radios are way better. Depending on the speakers you get, you make just end up having to turn the volume further up then you usually would with the stock speakers.

uhhh no. turning up the volume more will just make it sound more distorted. if you wanna change out the speakers and plan on leaving that stock deck in for a while... get some cheap speakers. IMO, you should change out the deck FIRST, and THEN get some good quality speakers. and when looking at speakers, forget about the max. power, look at the RMS. thats the rating that REALLY counts.

Ahh...the most hotly debated topic: Speakers vs Deck
Here is my take on the subject... speakers are the life blood of the system
If you are on a budget and want to get the most bang for the buck and see
an improvement..do the speakers first. Budget yourself a min of $300 for
the sets ( front and rear) This way you are in the manufactures 'mid level'
speaker area..better crossovers (if any), larger tweeters, better overall
components altogether. Make sense now.
As for those who say do the deck 1st: The avg car is about 6 years old
when customers want to replace/upgrade audio gear. The avg oem speaker
is trashed at this point ( dry rotted, surround is gone..basically a former
shell of itself). Now most aftermarket decks will see this situation as a dead
short and mute the output. This is a very dangerous situation for the radio
if this continues it can kill the output section of the radio. I see this all too often.
Think of its this way...You just built your Honda with a swap,I/H/E,suspension
and brake components and wheels..but you decided to use the 4 year old tires
on it 'cause money is tight. It will drive..but will it be working at its optimal
performance level?
