It appears as if theres some discrepancies... I have a 1991 crx si and they have 5 1/4 speakers. I replaced them in october myself so this is not a lie... perhaps it is different for other models/years... good luck

If you want to use the stock speaker mounts in your crx, the speaker size is 5 1/4. However, you can fit speakers as large as 6 1/2 inch if you replace the stock speaker mounts and just mount it yourself (via additional drilling, adhesives, etc.) Hope that helps...
The reason people say that 5 1/4's are the size (which is incorrect) is because you need to use a "Shallow" mount 6.5". Or you can cut the plastic cup where the magnet hits on a deeper 6.5" speaker and you should be just fine.
Since 1988 in all Civics/CRX's , the fronts have always been 6.5"
And yes the reason why I know, I own quite a few Hondas. I also own my own car audio shop.

Snip the back part out. The part of the plastic that somewhat looks like a vent. Cut them large enough so that the magnet will clear. I just did this on a 91 Prelude the other day too. Factory speakers are very shallow. There are very few aftermarket speakers that are worth anything that are shallow enough. The higher end speakers are deaper and have more magnet.
BudIce is correct, kind of...
The stock speaker is a "standard" 6.5", not to be confused with the "oversized" 6.5", a 5.25" speaker will fit, even the 4 mounting screw holes are there, [3 screw holes for the 6.5"].
Stock speaker mounting hole diameter is 5", speaker mounting depth is 2", anything else will need mods, like cutting a hole for the magnet of deeper then 2" standard 6.5", it can add up to 3/4" of more depth, a spacer can also be used to add at least another 1/2" of mounting depth, "hight" of speaker will determine spacer thickness.
As mentioned larger speakers can be installed, up to 7" diameter by 3" deep, to do so the stock plastic speaker housing will need to be replaced with a custom MDF speaker housing, made to fit the bigger speaker.94
Infinity, Pioneer, Eclipse and Alpine all have speaker that will fit, [standard 6.5"]
Although not a "true" standard 6.5" the Infinity REF6032si comes with a mounting ring that allows installation to the stock speaker housing, and it's a pretty good speaker...

The Eclipse SE6500 is a direct fit... http://www.eclipse-web.com/us/integrated/se6500.html
The Eclipse SP6510, needs either a spacer or a hole cut, but it is a much better speaker... http://www.eclipse-web.com/us/point/sp6910_6510.html
Like the Eclipse SP6510,the Alpine SPS600 needs a hole cut for the magnet or a spacer, [1/4"]... http://www.alpine-usa.com/product/view/sps-600, although IMO the Eclipse is the better speaker.
The Pioneer TS-G1642R is also a direct fit... http://www.pioneerelectronics.ca/POC...S-G1642R?tab=B Pioneer also has some others. 94
