You don't remember that humongous argument where you were trying to push speakers and an amp rather than an upgraded hu? You even carried it over to another forum.

comps and amplifier power would make a bigger difference than just swapping out the headunit. i'd still swap everything out.

i have had a few pair of alpine type s coax's, there decent, i've also used mb quart components, crossfire bmf components, rockford fosgate components, eclipse coax's, audiobahnn, pioneer, etc... by far my favorite's and what held up to the massive abuse of heavy metal was the rockford fosgate components i had, was a 3 way set and i ran 100w rms per ch to them, very sweet, not as clean as the quartz, but definitely louder and stout.

no

but the unit would clip the hell out of the signal and ruin the speakers.

Theoretically, there is a point where a speaker's power rating can be SO high that it can damage an under-powered amplifier (In this case, the amp built in to the HU), but I can't imagine that ever being a factor in car audio. I've seen it before with live setups (rock concert kind o' stuff).

In other words, no... Your speakers may get bored, but not damaged.
The exception would be if you were not running the HU wide open and distorting the hell out of it, in which case it would be the waveform clipping that would be causing damage... not the output power of your amp.

BTW - I have Alpine SPX-17PRO's in my four corners... couldn't be happier with them. I did my research, and bought what I considered to be the best, price be damned.

dude, if a speaker is rated more than what an amp can produce, the amp will clip the **** out of the signal tryin' to make up for power and ruin the speakers and in some cases ruin the amp.

you should ALWAYS have headroom. if a speaker is rated @ 80 watts, get an amp that can do 120-150. if a sub is rated @ 1000, get an amp that can do 1200-1500.
