I was just measuring mine today because I'm about to put in some components that are 2 7/8" deep. I measured and by cutting the rear plastic and using a small spacer you can get 3" of depth and still clear the front grill. Without the spacer and no cutting is a little less than two inches and even then you might have to cut the plastic because alot of speaker have a basket and magnet bigger than that hole.
I've also noticed that the mounting holes for alot of speakers dont match the stock civic holes, so you're most likely gonna have to tap your own holes in the pastic to mount the speakers.

How does it sound?? What model are they and what are you powering them with???
Did you run new speaker wire for the componets??? I'm in the process of doing that, oh man what a major bitch to get the new wire in the door, honda left no freaking room for extra wire, I took the door and customed my way through it too.
I'm just waiting on my dynamat door kit so I can put it all back together. I'm running Phoenix Gold 75rmsx4 with CDT components and 6x9s 3 ways for rear fill. I cant wait to hear it.
