Size depends on what kind of subs they are (model ... not just brand). If you go to the manufacturers website you SHOULD be able to find recommended airspaces and what not for the subs. If you have the manuals for them the numbers will be in there too. As for materials ALWAYS use MDF. Thickness of mdf doesn't matter much for Pioneers but you should use at least .5". Carpet and what not doesnt matter much since it's just there to make the box look pretty. To make the subs sound the best you gotta find the recommended airspace for them.

Actually here, I was bored so I found it for ya.

Find your subs and click on them. Somewhere in the description it tells you the recommended airspace volume for the subs.

Download blaubox from blaupunkts web site, then you can enter the subs parameters and it will recommend a box size, also vented or sealed or bandpass, whatever. If I were you I would use 3/4 inch MDF, about $18 a sheet at Home Depot, and they will cut it for you. Take the measurements from blaubox and bring them to Home Depot,, they will cut it, you glue it together and use drywall screws, then seal it with silicone.
