Any of the DEI alarm products are good reliable units, as are all the brand name ones, [Compustar, Audiovox/Prestige, Ungo, and a few others].
Keep in mind, any one of them is only as good as the install.

I recommend you find an authorized dealer for Viper alarms, and have them install it, it will get you a lifetime warranty on the alarm, [brain] and lifetime warranty on the install, well worth the extra $$.
You should be able to get a 2way Viper alarm installed for $500, W/ a couple options. 94

You can also add convenience options like window modules, [a DEI 530T will fully automate 2 windows up and down W/auto close when arming and "venting"] $30 in parts and 1.5hr of labour will get you remote power trunk release, maybe a valet for the sound system and so on. 94

The motion sensor would probably be a good idea to. Depending on how sensitive you have it, if someone even gets close enough to look in the glass the warning will go off. But on the flip side if it's too sensitive then it will pick up movement from rain trickling down the front windshield and continuously set off the warning.

Be careful with the 2-way VIPER paging unit as well. It's not too shock resistant so if you keep throwing it around on a dresser or something eventually it will prematurely break. And they're not cheap to replace either.

Best bang for the buck, One-way alarm with gps tracking. Let the phone call you to alert you that the car has been tampered with or moved

Well a 2way with GPS is a step up from a 1way with GPS, and a good step. 94

That's a good price for a 2-way out the door. Labor on alarms is fairly expensive cause they aren't a cake walk to do. Then again it depends on the vehicle to.

A good GPS tracking system from VIPER will probably run you about $700 installed or so. That's what they were runnin at the audio place i used to work at. But they're very good. You can actually track your vehicle online at the website. It's not a continuous track or anything, but it's very accurate. And if you ever lock your keys in the car you can use the website or phone service to unlock the door. And if your vehicle is stolen you can disable it from the website when the robber shuts off the engine.

I have done many "basic" alarm installs and then added other sensors/triggers/interrupts and convenience features later.
Just preplan the install, EG; if you want to add starter cut later, run the starter cut control lead to where you plan on installing the starter cut relay, or if you are going to add a hood pin-switch, run the lead for hood pin trigger out into the engine bay along with the siren leads now, [have the install shop do it] it should not cost any more. 94

I was trying to keep him underbudget. But I agree with you 100% percent. I also rather see him with a gps tracking system then with out it. But it depends on your area.

No. If it is installed correctly the would-be thief won't even know you have a GPS until it's too late. It will allow you to monitor your car if it is ever stolen and even disable it when the engine is turned off. Also if you lock your keys in the car you can unlock the door from the website or phone as well. Of course i am referring to the Viper GPS system. Not sure exactly how the other brands work.
