Default remote start for manuals?

Okay, I had a 94' Accord that was a automatic that I picked up a Viper 791xv alarm/remote start for but I ended up getting in a wreck and totalling out the car before I could install it. So my new car is a 95' Accord coupe but now I have a 5 speed. I know the remote start will work on my car but I'm a pothead and totally see myself leaving it in gear sooner or later so I'm not even going to risk it. What are some nice alarm/remote starts that are meant for manual transmission cars? I want something atleast as nice as the Viper 791xv, dont want to downgrade at all. So let me know what you guys reccomend.

Forgot to add I would like something that would be able to open/close the windows and sunroof. Not nessecarely open but I want to be able to get out of my car with the windows down and sunroof open and have them all close when the alarm is activated. Is that even possible?

I also want to be able to unlock my drivers door by itself or both doors at once. And finally, I would like to be able to turn on/off my rear defroster with the remote for those cold winter mornings.

compustar offer a "safe" remote start system for standard transmission equiped cars and i know its possible for you to wire in a dei window module to have a window rolled up when you armed the alarm.. however im not too sure about the sunroof, then again nothing is impossible.. it might just cost ya.

Is compustar the only company that makes a remote start for manual transmission cars? Whats the model number? How does it compare to the Viper I already have?

no compustar is not the only one....but they are one of the more well-known and more reliable manufacturers out there. there are quite a few compustar models to choose from. as far as the windows you can wire in just about window control module and have it work. the sunroof would need it's own control module wired in too. the defroster could be controlled with a simple relay wired in.

it's all possible...just depends on time and money.
don't expect to get all that stuff done in 1 hour at your local hack-n-whack though...it's gonna take a few hours to do it properly.

http://www.compustar.com/main.htm The very best in alarm/remote start systems, and as stated a DEI 530T for the power windows and a 529T for the sun roof. 94

How hard would it be for someone who has never installed a alarm before to do? I have a decent understanding of car audio so I'm not completely clueless about a cars wiring. I have wired up all my own decks/amps/subs and they have always turned out perfect.

I would like to try doing it myself to help save me some money if its possible. But I dont really want to dive into something like this if you guys think this would be over my head. I feel somewhat condident I could do it but the part that really confuses me the most is mostly just the routing of the wires and placement of everything. I would like to know the best spots to tie into factory wires, best spots to mount parts of the alarm, and the best way to cleanly route the wiring so its stealth and oem looking. Plus the whole relay thing kinda confuses me too. If anybody has any links to tutorials or guides that would help me out that would be great. I know the install is the most important part of a alarm so if I do it myself I want to know exactly how the professionals do it.

As long as you have the tools, know how to solder, have and know how to use a multimeter, and a day or two for the install, and are reasonably comfortable around the cars wiring and can fallow directions, it's not that big of a deal.

The level of "stealth" install will effect the amount of time it will take to do the job and it's complexity.

Basic proper install will take a component no0b 1-2 full days, depending on options.

Semi stealth will take you 2 days min. even without options.

A full on stealth install, [dash pull] will take at least a week.

Again the above depends on how many options you want and how quickly you pick up on alarm installing.

READ... http://www.the12volt.com/relays/relays.asp http://www.the12volt.com/diodes/diodes.asp in fact there is lots of good info here... http://www.the12volt.com/

Here is the tag in sheet for your car... http://www.directwholesale.net...eID=3 although the tag in location can be at different locations, EG; park light flash red/black in blue plug @ fuse box, a better spot, [unless doing full on stealth] is the park light free pin on the under dash fuse box.

Every connection to the cars wire harness can and should be made at a plug that that wire is in, depinning the terminal from the plug and soldering the alarm lead to the terminal is the best and cleanest way to install the alarm/starters wiring.

The very first thing to do is find out what alarm/starter leads you need and remove the rest by depinning, next is find a location for the "brain", behind instrument cluster or above/below radio, under center console are all good spots, hard to access without pulling/disassembling something else.

Fell free to IM me if you have questions. 94

Cool, thanks for the info. I'm fairly confident with car wiring so I think I'm going to try and tackle this myself. I'm sure I'll have lots of questions for you once I'm ready to get started though. I still need to get a new alarm and sell my old one first so it will probably be a little bit before I need your help. If anyone wants a brand new in box viper 791xv alarm/remote start PM me, looking to get 200$ shipped.

I already have a multimeter but I still need to pick up a good soldering gun/iron. Any reccomendations as far as guns/irons go?

A good all around gun is the Weller dual watt units... http://www.testequipmentdepot....0.htm this is an all around good unit and can solder up to 8ga without any problem.

If your just looking for something for lighter gauge wiring, [like an alarm install] then something like this will do... http://www.testequipmentdepot....t.htm however, the gun can be used to solder even the thinnest leads, [with a little practice] the soldering iron is very good for "fine" soldering, but anything under 200W will have a very hard time soldering anything thicker then 14-12 gauge.

The best, if you can afford it is both, start with the iron, a 100W one and you should be good to go. 94

Sorry to steal this, but it could benefit OP as well i guess. Question is what makes some of those compustars "manual transmission compatible"

I would also like know exactly how they work. Specifically the Compustar 2W900FM-S made for manual transmissions since thats the one I'm heavily considering.

And would the 2W900FM-S even be a good choice? It looks comparible to the Viper I already have, just want to make sure I'm not downgrading at all.

All Compustar remote starters, alarm/remote starters are manual transmission "ready", a loop has to be cut for auto transmissions, [except on the manual transmission specific units, no loop to cut].

Like most remote starts for standards, the Compustar uses a ready mode, [reservation mode] you come to a stop set the hand brake take your foot off the foot brake and turn off the ign., the motor keeps running, exit the car, you must obviously be in neutral to get out of the car with the motor running, if programed, when the last door closes the motor will shut off the alarm will arm, [combo unit] and doors will lock, [if wired]. 94

window mods and sunroof will be the most difficult part of the install. i think 2-3 days for a completed clean install is within reason. my first alarm install was a complete mess. i redid it 3 times before i was happy with it. for me to do everything u wanted... it would take 6-7 hrs. and that's not removing the dash... i don't think that's completely neccessary when ur starter is in the engine bay and ur ign harness is still under the steering column.

Couldnt that be done with the viper alarm I already have though? I know someone who has a viper alarm with a 5 speed and he mounted a button in his car that he can push while the car is running that activates the remote start. So he can then take the key out of the car and it continues to run until he arms the alarm. He also said the button wasnt nessecary, it could be done with the remote too if he wanted. He just said its easier for him to hit a button mounted in the car than finding the button on the remote while the keys are in the ignition still.

So why couldnt this be triggered by setting the ebrake too just like the compustar or other models? I mean when I pull my ebrake, a ebrake light turns on on my dash so there is already a switch of some sorts that sets the light off when the ebrake is pulled. Why couldnt I tap into whatever wire that is and use that to activate the remote start? If it can be done by a button mounted in the car or by a aux. channel on the remote, I dont see why you couldnt also have it activated when the ebrake light turns on on the dash.

IMPORTANT! This product is designed for fuel-injected, automatic transmission vehicles only.
Installing it in a standard transmission vehicle is dangerous and is contrary to its intended use. from page 5 of the install manual.

The Viper unit can be installed into a standard, program turbo timer on and no buttons have to be pushed, motor will keep running when ign. is turned off.

The problem is there is nothing preventing you or anybody from going into the car, [after motor shuts down] and putting/knocking it into gear, and then you remotely starting the motor.

The above is not possible with remote starts for standard transmission cars, opening a door, and in most cases, the trunk/hatch or hood will cancel "ready mode".

It is possible to install a switch on the shift linkage that supplies a ground to the remote starts hood pin input unless tranny is in neutral, it can be difficult to do and not 100% reliable. 94

word FCM!
he def. knows his ****.
the vipers are all designed for fuel injected, automatic transmissions only. but like fcm said it can be done on a stick...although definitely not recommended. the only manual transmission cars i feel remotely safe putting a viper combo unit into are subarus...cuz they have a neutral safety wire in the tranny itself...even though they're stick. can be done with a simple relay to the neutral safety wire of the viper unit.

just cuz it CAN be done doesn't make it right....like 4 6X9s in the rear deck

Well I'm thinking if I wired it up so the remote start is activated by my e brake it should be pretty safe. I mean if the car is still running after I already get out of it they only way its going to get put into gear is if someone else messes with it. And I only have one remote and one key, and nobody has access to them except me.

Hey it's your car, do what you think is OK, keep in mind that if for any reason you do get out of the car and it's not running, it will still remotely start, in gear or not, E brake on or not, another thing, your insurer will not pay out if you have a problem that was caused by the remote start.

Also lets hope that day you do mess up, and you will, it's just a brick wall you hit. 94

I brought an expensive car alarm, remote starter, & keyless entry from Commando's car alrams (commandocaralarms.com), and I want to put it on my Nissan Sentra that's a 5-speed. (Don't want to put it in my Honda!)
What kind of relay I need to use to bypass the clutch? Do I need any other relays for the alarm to work properly?

Remote start in a manual trans

Even the Compustar isn't truly safe because it REQUIRES you to park in the car in neutral relying soley on the ebrake to keep your car from rolling into a brick wall.

A Compustar can not be started in gear, it must be put in reservation mode before you get out of the car, [engine running] once the door is closed engine will turn off, if a door or hatch/trunk is opened reservation mode is canceled and remote start will not work.

Yes I know you probably meant that parking a car with just the "E" brake is something you do not recommend, but that's not what it sounded or looked like. 94

LOL!!! As if the picture above wasn't enough "incentive" not to put a starter on a 5 speed...

And by the way, although I agree with WRX about your thread jack, I went to that website, and I wouldn't put any of those alarms on a Yugo. They look like they rank right up there with Bulldog security...
