I have and like it.. I like how you can have your car start and warm up the engine while you chill inside your house..and if you set the climate control.. you can have it cool down your interior (a/c) or warm it up in the winter (heater) along w/ the motor... then you can just get in and drive... I got it back in mid/late 90's when not many people had it so people were like wow.. now its common to have it but its still convenient...

It can be done for less than $20.00
All you need is a couple of relays, and a free channel on your alarm.

Can be done, and can be done safely are two separate statements. Last time I checked it requires like 8 relays (check the12volt.com.) If you have a free channel buy a RS module, it's easy and safe.

I have the remote start for my car and its helpful but what i also heard is that using the remote start a lot can cause problems with your starter.. distributer.

Only if your RS isn't working properly - and grinding. The good RS's read the tach signal to prevent this. How would it hurt your distributor? The bigger issue is starting the car cold and idling it for a while. The cumulative effect of this is definitely not as good as the old-fashioned way of warming your car up (or cooling it down )

haha so there are good rs's and bad rs tegs? I know two other peeps with tegs that have remote start. On occasions, the remote start doesnt work on the first try in the morning when its cold out for all 3 of us and it grinds. So you going to honestly tell me that grinding will not mess up the starter? LoL

he meant RS as Remote Start not good and bad RS trim tegs... anyway mine starts up fine and doesn't keep grinding once the car is started.. it reads the signal off the tach and knows when the car has been started and stops grinding.. also if you forget that you don't have to turn your key to "start" it also has the anti-grind technology where if the car is already started w/ the RS it won't activate your starter if you turn the key to "start" and start grinding..

will this remote start work on a manual transmission? if so, what would happen if you left your car in gear and started it up?

yeah it'll work on manuals on a good remote start system like Cliffords.. theres a certain routine/safety checks you have to go through before you shut down in order for the car to remote start the next time.... on others or ghetto rigged remote starts.. well I'm sure someone will post.. their cars hopped and went through the garage/house.. Lolz

Cliffords procedure..
FOR ALL MANUAL TRANS MISSIONS, PER FORM THE FOLLOWING STEPS:
1) Start the car using the ignition key.
2) Set the emergency brake.
3) Set the heat or AC to ON.
4) MAKE SURE THE CAR IS IN NEUTRAL.
5) Transmit the manual transmission enble function by pressing button 11 on the master remote control.
6) Turn the key OFF and exit. The car stays running.
7) Close all doors, arm the alarm. The engine stops running. You are now in manual transmission mode.
8) Provided the doors are never opened or the alarm is not triggered, the remote start func tion will start the vehicle’s engine. If a door is opened or if the alarm is triggered, manual transmission mode is canceled.
9) Press button 4 on the master remote or the * button on the companion remote to start the engine.

I have a remote start option but its made specifically for automatics...like most.

There is a control switch to manually enable and disable remote start. I was hoping to wire this switch in series with my ebrake switch, hood/trunk pins (the unit does this already I belive), but the problem is designing a good, permanent mechanical (or electrical if i'm lucky!) means of making sure that the transmission is in neutral.

If ANYONE has ideas on how I could do this with high reliability I would appreciate the reply. I realize the safety hazards posed if the system were to be started accidentally and want to take all precautions.

I was thinking of somehow having two infrared sensors above and below the neutral position line, this way if i'm in gear 1,3,5 the top infrared would be broken, and if in 2,4,R the bottom one would be, the only way it could start is if both are intact. If this is possible, any ideas on a low powered ccd/infrared/light type sensor i could use?? (cmon tekken!)

leave the car in gear, and then use remote start, then you can watch you car drive away. Back in my shop manager/installer days I did it once to a Mustang. My shop only installed on automatics. Liability thing.

that's a routine you gotta get used to.
just curious, do automatics have these similar procedures also?

Honestly guys, buy a remote starter designed for manuals, murphy's law says you will start it in gear otherwise. The only difference with these remote starters is you press a button on the remote and turn the key off with your foot off the brake. Everything else is the same as not having a remote starter (think about it.) Takes a little training but no major behavior changes. BTW, you don't have to turn the AC or heat on, it just gets the interior nice before you get in.

Automatics do not require you to do this. They have a neutral safety switch which interfaces with the remote starter. Car won't remote start without the car in park.
