so the guy who i bought my car from had an aftermarket cd player installed in it. instead of buying a wiring harness he just cut up the stock one
can someone tell me how i can replace this? is the harness just one or is it connected to a bigger harness. TIA

Man, you should know that Metra makes harnesses for OEM radios... what kind of car is this? 98 LS?
If thats the case, the wire harness model is 71-1720.

Then, get 70-1720 to wire to your aftermarket stereo.

Unless you want to install an OEM HU, [Honda/Acura] just hard-wire the aftermarket HUs harness to the cut OEM radio harness leads, this will help... http://www.installdr.com/Harnesses/HA-Wiring.pdf
If you do want to install a stock HU, do as JDM_Ej suggests, get the "reverse" harness, most car audio shops will stock them, they will be $10 or so, a new (used] dash harness will be at least $100, [pick a part] plus a dash pull.

BTW I see no point in installing the "reverse" harness so you can get a harness adapter to install an aftermarket HU.

A soldering iron and some shrink tube and a short piece if convoluted tubing, [wire loom] and some electrical tape and the aftermarket HU harness and you can clean it right up and make it look like the aftermarket HU plug came stock with the car.
I do the above all the time, it's a lot cheaper and a hell of a lot easier then replacing the dash harness, [by a lot], and cleaner then installing the reverse harness, [or OEM radio plug] and then having to add the harness adapter so you can install an aftermarket HU and plug it into the OEM radio harness plug.
First, it's $10-$20 worth of plugs you do not need.
Second, it eliminates 4 connections.
Third, it's less work and a cleaner, as it eliminates the bulk of the 2 plugs and their wiring.
Again, this assumes you are installing an aftermarket HU, not a stock HU.
