Ported The sound will be a little louder, and hit a little harder

Non-Ported The sound will be crisp, and you will have better response from the JL.

I have had both ported and non ported on my JL W6
I am going with the non-ported at the moment, because the space that it saves.

Lower, louder and bigger box. You should give it a try and see if you like it.

do you guys think a bigger sealed box with polyfill will bump as hard as a smaller ported box? i kinda like the idea of 'tight' bass but want it loud as well

A large sealed box will play lower. IMO, you should go small/medium sealed or large ported. Large sealed boxes may not control the sub at lower frequencies well. If you use winisd you can check out the maximum power graph for your box and subwoofer to make sure you are not going to blow it.
