Default playing subs with trunk open

Someone told me not to turn up my stereo and let my subs hit with the trunk open. They said that is does something with the air space. I think it's bs but I just wanted to check it out.

as long as the subs are in a good enclosure it doesn't do anything to them..it won't sound good because they're playing in open air..thats about it

whoever told you that was using some weak info. Some subs are even designed for non enclosed use, with just an infinite baffle. If your sub is in a box, opening the trunk would have nothing to do with causing the sub to fail. Thats like saying if i took that same sub, and put it in a suv truck with the windows and sunroof open, that the sub would blow. Your stereo is fine as long as you are using a sealed or small ported box.

I agree with what everyone else has posted so far, with the exception of free-air subs, (which you probably don't have) it is not great for the sub to play a free-air sub with the trunk open, if their in a box then it's fine, they just won't sound too hot at full volume

THere is nothing more free air then venting your subs to the outside world!! There's nothing wrong with that application. Mic Wallace in his IASCA mitsu (I think that's what it is) has 4 ID10v3's mounted in an infinite baffle config in his spare tire well. So the subs vent to the outside world. He used some type of fabric to let air out but keep any moisture away from the subs (can't recall the type) - so it is ok to do.

wallace's free-air's where tuned to work that way, and although venting to the outside, he still had his trunk to work as a chamber (just as a trunk acts as a chamber for free-airs typically) however in the typical installation when the trunk is open, the free-airs loose some of their chamber, which will cause them to distort easier and wear them out prematurely therefore not being the greatest way to treat them
