Default need help with ohms

quick question...

how do I figure out what kind of impedence (ohms) i need to be running on my amp to power 2 alpine type R's (dual 4ohm voice coil)?

To rephrase the question how many ohms should the amp be to power the two subs either in parallel or bridged?

thanks 4 the help!

you could run em series/parallel(yes combo of the 2) for a 4ohm load or just parallel for a 1 ohm load.
It wont be hard to find an amp to run those subs in either of the loads and bridgeing would be nice too to get a much higher power rating for less cash.

Did you have any brands in mind?

i was thinking about the power acoustic a3000db shown here
http://www.amazon.com/Power-Ac...9W5LT

any thoughts about this amp

it could be run bridged for 3000 watts at 1 ohm for 3000 watts

i figure i will turn the amp down a little bit so i can get high power but good sound quality... any thoughts?

thanks

The subs and VCs can be wired in a number of ways parallel, series or a combination of both because you have two 500W continuous DVC 4 ohm subs I would wire the VCs of each sub is series, that will make the load, [impedance] 8 ohms for each speaker, the wire the two speakers in parallel, (series/parallel) for a final load of 4 ohms, [it is the best way to wire them]... http://mobile.jlaudio.com/supp...d=161 2 DVC drivers with Voice Coils in Series / Parallel.

Now it's just a matter of finding an amp that makes 1000W RMS into a 4 ohm load, this one works very well... http://mobile.jlaudio.com/prod...d=221 94

FCM is right, 4ohm would be better. Many amps cannot support a 1ohm load and the units that can will run hotter at that low of a resistance and cause sound distortion.

4ohm will be your best bet with most automotive amplifiers.

I highly dought that amp will do 3k watts. The manufacturers always try to trick people by switching their numbers around to sound better. Look at tha key word they use... MAX... dont go by max watts instead look for RMS!!!!

Event 800-900 watts RMS would drive your speakers, [subs] and it would sound OK, however at higher SPLs SQ would suffer.

The other thing to keep in mind is, "under-powering" the chances of damaging your speakers is greater if you are under-powered then if you are over-powered, [not that over-powering will not damage a speaker, it will].

If Power Acoustik is fudging the numbers and that 1100W RMS is at, lets say 15VDC, and it makes 800W RMS into 4 ohms @ 12.5VDC you are "under-powered" by 200W but as I said, it will drive the subs all day long and sound OK without any damage to the speakers.

You get what you pay for, the JL Audio 1000/1 is a lot more money, [brand new unit, from an authorized dealer] check your JL Audio dealer, maybe he has a used/demo/trade in that he will sell cheaper. 94

so what i should be looking for is an amp that is at least 1000w @ 4 ohm
and max 3000w @ 4 ohm and this will give me good sq

i know all about under powering... i think thats what killed my 15" audiobahn
it is 600w RMS hooked up to a 400w amp and eventually it blew...

I would feed em w/ NO MORE than 1k rms and dont worry about the max power! max power is there for for guys that dont know much and a lame selling tool. Personally I wouldnt buy any amp with a "max power" rating on the amp itself!

3k will NOT give more SQ, just spl. What are youre goals anyway? sq, spl or combo of both?

power acoustik is an ok entry level amp but have you checked into other makes.

I would recommend the US Amps and could send you to a guy from another forum who does or used to work for em and he is a good guy! probably a little cheaper than the link I sent you.
The infinity would probably be better than acoustik

Although matching amps to subs, [RMS wattage] is important, it is not what makes good SQ, you can have great SQ running 400W RMS into a 500W speaker, good SQ comes from, first the equipment, then the install, then the setup, all 3 are very important, if you are lacking in any one of them, good SQ will be difficult to get.

You are correct, you should be looking for an amp that makes at least 1000W RMS into 4 ohms @ 12.5V, [a little over-powered is OK] forget about peak/max powers, [3000W] deal only with RMS power, [amps] and continuous power handling, [speakers], and if your looking for SQ, look for a quality product and unless you are getting a hell of a deal your not going to get a quality 1000W RMS amp for under $500-$800. 94

True that! I have 500 clean wrms,14.7 stable, feeding a sealed 12 and think its great. but thats me and im more of a sq than sq/spl or spl fan! If people can hear it thats fine with me but definately not MY goal!

Do not buy anything from theses idiots from this site or there janky store in downtown la. you will get screwed, and you will not get a brandnew in box item.

Whatever you get, get it from an authorized dealer, that way if you have a problem it will be covered by manufacturer's warranty, and you will get a brand new in a box unit, not a refurb, or recalled one.
That goes for any brand. 94
