Default Need Advice/Help guys.

I want to add a In Dash DVD player and speakers into my Tahoe. Need some recommendations for stuff. The guy at the local stereo shop suggested 3 12" JL subs in the back and of course amps and whatever else. I would like to have a Theater sound more then anything else. The stock size speakers are

Front Door - 6 1/2" + tweeters
Rear Door - 6 3/4"
Rear Pillar - 4x10"

Thanks for any advice.

I hate when people go with an odd number of subs. It just pisses me off. It's so much easier IMO to find amps for an even number of subs. The JL's are good subs, but I would only go with two. 3 or more is just for awe factor.

You want theater sound, are you referring to 5.1 surround sound?

If you want theater sound, I'm not sure of a head unit, but you don't need loud speakers, you want quality, and don't have to spend much money on them. On good sub will do, you don't need your car to pulse if you want a well balanced theater system. JL is good, but expensive, if you have room for two cheaper subs, go for the infinity reference subs, cheep but decent. I have one, and there is plenty of good sound its louder than my alpine r-types go. as far a speakers, the r-types are great, don't get the s-types no matter what, the infinity kappa series is also good for quality not dB. Amps, I love my alpine. the V12 series will power close to anything decently, and they have great clarity. A cross over is important if you really want great balanced sound. Get a 5 channel Highpass and lowpass, for your subs/tweeters/and mids. Eclipse makes great crossovers, check Ebay for all of these, I have had nothing but good experiance with audio stuff on Ebay, but get everything new. Any other questions? I am intersted on what you decide on for a DVD player, let us know.

Sounds like a fun project. Are you going to put a center channel in the dash? A single four inch(or pair right next to each other) should work well. You probably want to disable the rear door speakers and use the rear pillars speakers when in 5.1 mode.

How much are you looking to spend for everthing?

The new Alpine indash is the best right now, but the price is up there, and there will be more competitve units soon.

I wouldn't suggest anything less than a 6.5" component set or really good coaxial (if they exist) for the center channel. Since most of the dialogue comes out of the center its extremely important that it sound natural. I think the lower frequency response of the larger driver helps greatly in accurately reproducing voices.
