500-700 $
500-1000 watts

Just right for a hatch

good on the price but 500 watts is not enough. should probably doo at least 700 to get quality sound with it.

if you decide to go with the new 8w7 or a 10w7, get a jl 500.1 amp to push either one. if you decide to get a 12w7 (like i have ) or a 13w7, you will want to go with a jl 1000.1 amp.

there is not much point into getting a 10w7 and a 1000.1 amp because the 10 only only handle about 500watts. - as goes with the 8w7

i have a 12w7 powered by a jl 1000.1 amp in my civic coupe....yes, it slams....and if you decide to go with a w7 you will most likely want to do some sound deadening to your car because any of the w7's are LOUD!

the 10W7 can handle 500 watts RMS. i say it would handle the 1000.1 for awhile.
but not for tooo long. you can turn the boost all the way down on the 1000.1 ...

also, the W7's are a single 3 ohm voice coil..except for the 13W7 which is a 1.5 ohm dvc. so, for those amps rated at (example) 1000watts at a 2ohm load and
500 at a 4ohm load, you'd probably be getting around 750 out of your amp if
it's not a JL amp.

JL's amp regulates it's power output to it's rms rating. as i was told by the
knowledgeable rcurley55 on this board, the R.I.P.S system the JL amp has
could be a voltage or current hog but it will keep it's power level up.
egh..if someone can explain it better pls do. i'm not an expert obviously.

You did a great job of explaining RIPS evol.

Now for those who dont have a clue...I'll state it again:

10w7 and 12w7 are perfect for the 500/1 amps ( 1 per sub)
13W7 is best suited for the 1000/1 ( but it can drive a 12 to its
mechanical failure limits....ie it can( and has ) ripped 12w7's
a new one. If you want a great alternative ( and have the room)
use 2 12w6v2 subs (total 4 ohm load)..you will be happy.

Not raging but this "will not work senarios" are all subjective ideas
possible made by persons who have never come in contact with the
item at all. Just my .02

Now go play nice....

wouldn't it be better to get a 1000.1 to run the 12w7 because of it's [12w7] 750 watts of continuous power handling?

yeah, a 500.1 will push it just fine to an extent, but he should get a 1000.1 to take advantage of the subs power (if he's willing to dish out that kinda cash flow) also, jl-audio recommends the 1000.1 AMP FOR 12w7's and 13w7's

You can rip a 12w7 with probably 500 watts below tuning frequency in a ported box. I normally consider mechanical failures user error. Thermal power handling is nothing, if your setup is not done correctly.

Is he stupid or in need of money? It doesn't get much better for under $1000.

yup. gotta also remember that the JL 500/1 does about 650 watts RMS and sometimes close to 700 (there has been some that benched over). with that much power, you can easily reach the mechanical limits of any W7.

how come people say "get the 1000/1 if you get a 12W7 or 13W7"? a 500/1 will work on them and will do nicely. the 12/13W7 with a 500/1 will be LOUDER than the 10W7 given same install.

back to the topic. price will vary from places to places. some place are expensive, some are cheap. i got my 2 10W7 for $200 each (practically new; not broken in yet). just gotta wait and look around.

thanks for all the info .. I put in my hatch last night and realised after about half of 50 cents album that that w7 is a bit more than I need right now... I think I'll just keep my low-end w0-10 .. That freakin w-7 sub and box weighs about 60 pounds.. I put a turbo on the G ride to make it faster .. Not to compensate for the extra 100 plus pounds of sub and amp equip. MOre Vroom Less Booom!!

Which w7 did you put in? Did you use your current amp to "test drive" it?

gsteg, My problem is that I am a reformed basshead I think the other reformed bassheads can't bear to see any potential in a sub left untapped. Hence the recommendation for 1000 watts. That's why I suggested that he buy the sub first and listen to it with his current amp before deciding how much power he wanted.

my boy that used to work at a stereo store hooked it up to my xtant 4-channel . I dont know exactly how but my amp was only rated at I think 500watts.. It may have been underpowered but it was still way stronger than the W-0..
