Default integra stereo broke

hey, my stereo system seems to be messed up in my 96 integra ls. when music is playing it seems to be real low volume even when i turn it up loud. also when there is bass the speakers crackle. it doesnt seem to be the speakers because i put one of my friends speakers that work in his car in mine and it did the same thing.

could it be bad wiring? or maybe the stereo unit itself?

its a stock system, stock speakers...stock deck...cd player

if anyone has any ideas, please let me know.

thanks

Could be wiring, or the fact the head unit is 12 years old, hard to say. If one speaker is shorted or a factory wire, it could have the symptoms you mentioned (on all speakers). The best way to find out is to remove the head unit and test it out of the vehicle, remove all outside factors and see how the deck performs. BTW, you can purchase radio side harnesses for this purpose, the Metra part is a 71-1720, should be about $18 at local shops.
