Default downfiring subs in a jeep?

im having trouble with my jeep

when i fire them backwards they shake everything, forward sound like crap, im thinking of a box that will fire them down, it would be on 'stilts' and have the mids on top and the amps on the sides

its a 96 suzuki samurai jeep, the back looks like this:

in this pic i have them facing up and they sounded ok but, you know...

its a COMPANY jeep so i cant sound deaden the back to stop the rattling, the damn rattling is the only reason i cant face them back, they sound loudest like that

im thinking of having them facing down about 5 inches from the floor and putting foam under the carpet to absorb some of the mess

So you are basically building a KICKER BOX* for your SUV.
Since is a company ride...and you want some tunes.just fire it to the rear.
You are basically doing a boundary loading if you fire it to the
floor as well...you'll get the same effect. Its a now win in that rattle can.

Wow you dont want to sound deaden but you can run amp wires in the
company car....to each his own. ( Hey I have installed systems in
car peeps rented for prom nite..go figure).

* Stillwater Designs ( KICKER ) created this design for suv's that did not
have rear spaeker provisions. basically its a full range box.

uhhh thanks

i can put power wires in the car but sticking sound deadener all over the back is a bit too messy! i was thinking of gluing foam in the seams with pattex, that would come off easily

im going to try the downfiring as ive always wanted to, but ill test it first with some books around the box or something

Here's what you can do... make a 1" tall 3 way wall to put on the box... You can then face your subs downward, and the 3 walls will act as a bandpass type enclosure, firing the air forward...

know what i mean?

scrapin and roach know.

that is the only style of box I've ever heard sound good in a (real) Jeep. I would imagine the same to be true for a samurai.

yeah this is exactly what i had in mind, i doubt ill do it to my existig box though ill get my box builder to design one with shelf on top too for the amps to slide out on a 'rack' and space for the mids in the top of the box, i'll get him to leather everything too

question: would the 3 way wall sound better if it was seperate chambers or one big one, and would it be good to lenthen it to blow the bass past the box under the seat and into the front?

oh man im getting exited about doing this!!!!

and what about the ports? maybe i should make the box sealed? or have the ports coming out the side?

or maybe i should attach some 3inch hoses to the ports and have them stretched under the front seats firing in between her legs

" to blow the bass past the box under the seat and into the front?"

that's where the magic comes from in this set up.

go sealed. the front of the box acts as the vent

make it two chambers, if you think the box needs the strength against flexing.

great!@!!! i definatlely think the box will need the support as alot of weight will be on the surround

do you think i should slant the subs forword or back or just straight down? would 3" be the maximum maybe a longer distance from the subs to the floor would change the note or something?

put the subs straight up and down. If you build a new box, just make the sides 2-3" longer than where you put the face, and that will be enough support... Don't go more than 2-3" or you lose the bandpass effect. And dont split them.

And go SEALED ON YOUR BOX!!!! NO PORTS!

well, on the INTERNAL you can run a split sealed... but for the raised 3" section, dont split them.

If you are running in mono, dont bother with a split sealed...

if you want extra balance, just put some little studs or small squares of wood on the bottom to help hold it up, but wont separate the airspace...
