But I guess if you like flashy lights and little dolphins on your screen, then cool. </TD></TR></TABLE>
Maybe I like 24 bit Burr-Brown D/A converters, Built-in equalization, 6.5v pre-outs, user friendly MP3 controls.....
I don't even use the animated display.
It sure seems to me that you don't have any experience with the upper end Pioneer units, and seem too quick to dismiss them for their flashy display.

From what I can see the 9851 is just the 2005 version of the 9831.
2004 2005
-----------------
9831 9851
9833 9853
9835 9855
From the Alpine Press Releases:
"Starting at $250, the 2005 head units have new source indicators for Sirius and XM, proprietary interface and features for easier navigation of music files and improved music playback"
Also:
The 9853 and 9855 will have the new Glide Touch control (Similar to a laptop touchpad but a small horizontal strip) which will be especially useful when searching for a MP3 or using the ipod interface. The entry level 9851 head unit doesn't have this control, and it's specs are almost identical to last year's 9831.

I diagree...Had the AVIC-N1, got rid of it last week. I'll stick with my superior 8v pre-out, and extensive EQ that my Eclipse provides.

Heh...
The Avic-N1 doesn't have the processing features we're talking about. That really is just the flashy display and features.
The only pioneer decks with comparable processing (to eclipse) would be:
860/960mp, P9 combo, 940mp. --- Maybe I missed a few, not sure.
BTW: I own an eclipse, but the new eclipse line looks ridiculous (2005 shown at CES). I wonder if they're still good performers though...

That's what I've been trying to relay to you folks...The CD8454 I have is by far one of the best sounding units I have ever owned...But don't take my word for it, I've only had 4 different Alpine units, 2 Clarion units, 2 Pioneer units, and this makes my 2nd Eclipse.

I still wonder why you are pushing this considering you are talking about a $600+ deck when the thread creator specifically mentioned a $250-$300 price range.

Because people are trying to sit there and push the fact that a Pioneer deck is even on the same field as an Eclipse or Alpine.

Call it what you want, Pioneer might be good for people looking to spend $200...There were just some arguing that it was at the same level as Eclipse, if not better.

Eclipse is nice, I should know, I own one.
BUT - I will say that the Pioneer is a powerful unit for the price. My friend got his 860mp for just over 300, I believe it can be had for under 300 now. That's a lot of tuning capability for the price.
I got my cd8053 for $300 also though, Brand new from Good Guys (There was a good guys and tweeter sale when the model got discontinued). So at that price, heh...couldn't pass it up.
As far as the sound quality: uh...I don't know that there's much difference. If I had to guess, I think the transport in the eclipse unit is better, but the DAC section might be about the same - or the pioneer might be a little better there...who knows. Just because they claim Burr-Brown doesn't mean they implemented it right. The problem is that I haven't tried both units on the same setup - people like me change things around too much.
I do think I heard a difference between eclipse and alpine though, giving the nod to eclipse. I don't want to make any unproven statements though, too many variables you know...that's why I'm hesitant to disparage (or praise) products.
