Dead Stereo
1998 Honda Accord Ex 4 cyl. AM/FM/CD
Last week I had to slam on my breaks to avoid a car that backed out of it's spot and my stereo just cut off. It is as weird as it sounds. I didn't hit the car or anything else and nothing flew forward and hit the dash inside of the cabin. The stereo just cut off as I hit the breaks. I tried taking my stereo out, unplugging it and plugging it back in...nothing. I tried holding down 1 and 6 at the same time on the stereo (a tech recommended that) and nothing. I placed the key in the accessory position for an hour and came back to...nothing. I have an anti-theft light that doesn't stop flashing and the back lights come on when I turn on the cars interior lights. No sound though. Nada. The dealer wants $90 just to look at it. Any help? Thanks in advance!

Is it the factory unit in the car? Did you try checking the fuses?
What you can do is see if you are getting 12v constant and 12v accessory going to the radio. Take it from there. If one of the two wires doesn't have 12v going to it, it most likely is just a fuse. If both have 12v going to it, it might have something to do with the radio, or the connection to the radio.

I'll try pulling a fuse Tuesday and see if that brings it back to life. Is this a common problem? Or are fuses common culprits for a multitude of problems? It is the factory stereo.
As mentioned, your system has two fuses, if the anti theft light is flashing the constant power fuse is good, [normally found in the engine bay fuse box] so if it is a fuse problem it will be the acc. power fuse, [normally found in the under dash fuse box].
Although not normal, a fuse could "break" on hard braking, the cars normal vibration can damage a fuse, these fuses will look good, as they are not blown, just damaged, what will happen is the fuse filament will break off one of the fuse legs, it will look good, may even test good with a meter, but will loose continuity as soon as current is passed through it.

Fcm and Norb, thanks for your help and advice. I pulled the 7.5A fuse this afternoon under my dash and found a cracked fuse that was blown half in and out of it's plug. I replaced the fuse and the stereo cranked right up once I put in the code! Thanks again for the help!
