Default could I use a basic crossover for a sound activated light?

I just got a good deal on this club light at a local store. It has 7 different effects, one of which is sound activation. Basically it can either be connected to an audio source via an RCA cable or it has a built in mic. I am going to use the RCA option, and was thinking of connecting it to the stereo in my car. Anyway, I noticed that there is no sensitivity option when the RCA cable is used, so it's like it is at full sensitivity and basically responds to all the high and low notes of the song together, making it hard to see that it is actually going to the beat of the song. I was wondering if it would be possible to connect a simple crossover or filtering device so that I could choose what frequencies I want to send to the light, thus I could make it beat to just the bass notes/lower frequencies, or the higher notes/frequencies. Any recommendations on my best/cheapest method for accomplishing this?

Yes what you are thinking would work. I imagine these pick up 80-250hz they are what most people would consider "beats". You can buy crossovers built into the RCA. You would probably want at least a -12dB crossover.
