Car Head unit and computer power supply...
ok i got in a car accident today and i was thinking of hooking up my sound system in my room using a computer power supply.
i figure that since the comptuer power supply uses a 12v connection as does the amp, so it can work in theory
the only thing i need to figure out is wiring, i know positive/negative but what about a constant power, i dont wanna have to unplug my power supply to turn it off because it will clear headunit settings, so it will need some sort of constant power to save these settings.
basically this is how i will go about it, tell me what you think.
basically i have the
red power
black ground
yellow batt/memory
blue for remote
a power supply has
red
black
black
yellow
im guessing red is power, but two blacks, one has to be a ground but what is the other black/yellow.
ill continue searching

looked at it further.
red is 12v power
black is ground for 12
yellow is 5v power
black is ground for 5
so i will probably need to use the main power supply connector correct?

only thing i could imagine u "could" do is put the red and yellow wires together. connecting it to the 12v on the power supply put a switch on the red wire. so u can turn it off with ur settings staying. of course the power supply would have to stay on.
yeah the power supply would definately have to stay on, the one im using has no power switch.
anyone know what voltage the yellow wire on headunits uses for batt/memory ?
thats what the HU uses to store information. if its a 12v or 5 v then im good to go i believe

Everything on the HU is 12V, [on the input] the yellow constant power on today's HU are not just for memory, it is also power for the internal amp, the red acc. wire is not much more then a trigger wire, assuming the power supply has enough current, [amps] to run the system, [maybe the HU, I doubt the amp] you will not need a switch, you can use the off/on HU switch, even if something stays on on your HU, [clock] when you turn it off if there is still power on the red acc. wire it's not a problem, it's not like you have a batt. to worry about.

Sounds like alot of trouble to go through, and i seriously doubt the power suply is going to have the capacity to run an amplifier. But in the event that it did i would just twist the red n yellow together and, like fcm said, use the power button on the radio.

well im in an apartment so i dont hink ill be running the amp, it pushes a 12" infinity
i can see the eviction notice already lol
btw fcm thanks for the help, this PSU only has like 12 A on the 12v rails but i believe it wil be fine for an HU, if not ill go buy a 25 dollar psu with something around 26 Amps or so

Just a quick question, this is an ATX supply yes? Have you figued out how to turn it one yet? What I mean by this is if you plug it in and try to get 12v out it will be 0. There is a green sense wire that needs to be grounded first.

i looked in the manual for my PSU that im using to get that information.
i have read everywhere else that yellow is for 12v as well.
ill figure it out in the end.
this is actually becoming a fun project.

well i finally did it.
basically you connect the yellow 12v wire from the PSU to the headunit/amp
1 of the many grounds to the head unit/amp
then connect the GREEN wire from the powersupply to a ground from the powersupply and it works great.
i do however suggest a more power powersupply, of at least 30A on the 12v rails, im using a 350watt 9A powersupply and its not enough to run 2.
but this is proof that this can easily be done by anyone who can see colors and know how to splice wires.

i did a writeup on how to do this, if anyone is interested. posted it in GDD figured that was best forum for it to go in
