audio performance questions
hey guys, I have a 99 hatch and the stock speakers aren't doing it for me. I can hardly hear the rear speakers and most of the sound is coming from the front. and there is absolutely NO bass at all in those stock speakers.
my question is if I buy some nice rear 6x9 speakers will the sound even out? or will I have to buy aftermarket front and rear speakers to even it out? and what are some good 6x9 speakers for the price?
I just want some decent sounding speakers that hits fairly hard. but I don't want to invest in amps or subs.
suggestions?

Does that car take 6x9's in the rear? I doubt it. If not, then don't try to put them in. If you want bass, get a sub. If you don't want a sub, and you want bass, well then you're a lost cause j/k. Nah, you'll have to get a 2ch amp for the rear 6.5's, disconnect the tweeters on them, and set the low pass filter to somwhere around 100.
Front speakers by far make the most difference in sound quality. A lot of people will have a bad rear speaker and wont even notice. I suggest buying front only, or buying all four, and never just buying rear alone.

oh it's not? I'm sure the rear are 6x9 in a ek hatch..oh well
so you think I should just buy some better front speakers? and I'm not looking for a load of bass which amps provide, just a good amount.
do you have any recommendations on some good front speakers? the front size is 6.5" right?

Before you start spouting off like you know better than the seasoned professionals in this forum, you might want to do a little research... Or, at the very least, go out in your own car and look for yourself...

Looks like a whole bunch of 5 1/4's to me...

and yes I did go out to my car and look at it myself in the past, and they're sure as hell not 5-1/4, because they are not circular. they're more oval shaped if you ask me..
anyway, anyone have front speakers they would recommend?

Yes your car has 6x9s in the rear and standard 6.5" in the doors.
The 6x9 mounting locations on the rear sides of your car are probably the crappiest 6x9 mounting system in any car I have ever seen, [and that's a lot of cars].
So the first thing we need to know is what is driving the stock speakers.
Is it the stock HU?
If it is an aftermarket HU, what is the make and model?
Was a wiring harness adapter used to connect it to the cars stock radio plug?

not a stock hu. I think it is a kenwood kdc-something. nothing too fancy though. someone told me don't buy speakers that have more power than your HU can handle..?
Polk DB is a nice line of speakers that you can get pretty cheap. I bought a set and was pretty impressed with them especially when you consider the price.
A model number would help.
Now the question is, how was it installed, mainly how was it wired to the stock speakers?
You say you are getting no bass, as "no bass" is a relative term, try this, play a favorite tune on CD, fade all the way to the front speakers, volume does not have to be loud, just at a comfortable listening level, now balance all the way to the left and then right speaker and back to the center again, pay close attention to bass response, if it is better when the left or right speaker is on then it is with both speakers are on, the speakers are wired out of phase, it will be a noticeable differance.
Fade all the way to the rears and do the same test for left to right phase.
Front to rear phase is a lot more suttle, when fading between the front set and rear set, you are listening for a "drop" in bass response at some point in the fade, it is not necessarily when fader is in the middle.
There are a few ways to increase bass response no matter what speakers you have.
No matter what Kenwood HU you have, it will be a "high powered" HU, [15 - 20 watts RMS per ch. x4].
The stock constant 12V+ can not supply the current the HUs internal 4ch amp needs, so replace it.
Run a fused 12ga or 10ga lead from the batt. to behind the HU and connect the HUs constant power, [yellow] to it, just like powering an off board amp.
You will also need to run a ground strap from the HUs chassis to the cars chassis, [good ground point].
If HU was ISO mounted, it already has all the ground it needs.

BTW, other things would involve speaker installation.

If you truely get no bass you have a problem. I assumed it just wasn't very much. After I had problems with my sub and unhooked them temporarely it seemed like the speakers put out no bass after having had a sub for years. Before I got used to the subs it put out decent bass.

WHOA WHOA WHOA THERE TIGER! I never committed to saying he definatley has this or that. I doubted it but if I wanted to look it up, I could.
If you have 6x9's in the back then you definately will be able to get some bass out of them. Hook them up to a 2ch with a low pass as I said earlier.
As for speakers not making bass, make sure the airspace coming off the rear of the speaker is sealed and completely seperate from the airspace coming off the front of the speaker. If they're mounted in sheet metal, use a dynamat extreme speaker kit. If they're in plastic you may want to have some fiberglass and/or mdf enclosures built to fit the stock location.
I like Alpine, Infinity, Polk.
