amps and its class
hey guys,
anyone know waht those class means? like i see amps that are in the Aclass or D class and everything in between. what are the classes and what does it mean? i guess after 3 years with my d class amp im sorta curious on what it means.
thanks.

it's how the amp works. Class D amps aren't designed for highs, all you would really hear is noise from the "pulses". That's why they are sub amps only. Then there's class A, class B, class AB (a mix on the two obviously).
The class describes the way the amplifier works. The most common you'll see:
Class A: Very clean since the power transistors stay on all the time. Yet, they get very hot and waste a lot of power.
Class A/B: Transistors switch on/off, so they don't waste as much power... yet there's more distortion due to the transistors turning on and off.

I checked this website and don't understand it completely anyone care to help me out on this one. I love the technical side of Car audio, but I don't think I have enough of a base to understand this.

my question was more what are the actual internal mechanisms that make the amp's different, I understand from the site that they handle power differently, and somthing about phase switch on the AC maybe? I don't understand how the amp can divide up the power and through that come to different results.
class D for example uses pulses, rather than a continous wave to increase efficency.
Class C is pretty much only good for satalite communications because the way it works, etc

so now, what good is an AB class amp. will it be useful for powering subs and or mids? im about to get a free amp in a ab class and my cousin needs an amp. but need to know if it works best with mids or subs.
thanks
thanks
Class AB are your typical 2 channel amps you can grab anywhere. Class D are your typical Mono block amps.
Between the two, Class D are more efficent and better suited to run subs. Class AB are better suited to run mids and highs, but can also be used to run subs
